Stuck at loading kernel

Okay something was updated on the 30th of Novembre that keeps my system from booting. At fist I thought it was the new nvidia drivers, so I masked them. That didn't help tho, so I haven't been updating since then. There was no error whatsoever displayed while running the update. Reverting to before the update let's me boot just fine but I'm stuck there and I don't like not being able to update so... halp plez?

How are you running update? The Pamac GUI? or what command in terminal?

Happens both with yay and garuda-update

Have you checked what else was updated on that day? E.g.:

cat /var/log/pacman.log | grep '2022-11-30' | egrep 'installed|upgraded|removed'

You could also try switching to the linux-lts kernel, garuda-update and see how it goes.
Pay also attention to the pacnew files: for example recently there was an update to mkinitcpio.conf that might have brought issues if you simply replaced the file with the pacnew version instead of merging (you could have e.g. removed nvidia and related stuff from the modules array).
Finally, please use garuda-inxi instead of inxi -Faz in the first post (unless something got truncated).

Thank you. I have corrected the first post. I have checked both the 29th and 30th of Novembre, I can't see anything that could produce this behaviour. I mean if the systemd update is safe..

Edit: I have just checked mkinitcpio.conf. I haven't merged the pacnew, could that be the root of the problem?

I don’t think so. If I remember correctly, the changes were in using () instead of “” in thr HOOKS, but both should be supported. But there might be something else, and it is always important to take care of those merges for system administration.
I think you should do it and then give a:

sudo mkinitcpio -P

I have just done that, thank you. I'll run an update later, can't rn because of a running scrub.

While I'm at it, can you guess at why plymouth fails? Maybe that's part of the problem?

Recently there was a bug in plymouth-git, already fixed if I remember correctly, so the problem might disappear with the update.
In any case, installing plymouth (which will ask to remove plymouth-git) should remove the problem.
But in principle it would be wise to revert to plymouth-git as soon as possible, since the plymouth package is not updated very often, so all the recent fixes are not available there.

I'm already running plymouth-git, so fingers crossed the update will fix that error too. I'll report afterwards.

There are only two ideas that come to my mind.
One would be to install and try the lts kernel:

sudo pacman -Syu linux-lts linux-lts-headers

The other is this tutorial, after updating.
You’ll have to try to boot to a tty from the grub or chroot.

So. I‘ve tried installing the lts kernel, tried going back to 6.0.11 (both installs run through just fine), but now I‘m stuck with both of them at setfont KDFONT blah.
Can‘t restore any former working snapshot, because all this back in forth since the 29th has pushed that one too far back, so my system is dead now.

What is the exact message?
I remember this hint recently.

You will have to chroot from a live USB to try that, or other things.
Maybe try to search for the exact message.

I‘ve been booting from live cd anyway, since that‘s now the only way.

The error was

setfont: KDFONTOP: Function not implemented

which is solved now, thanks to what you linked there. Now I‘m stuck again at Loading initial ramdisk. Changed between zen and lts kernels, each install/uninstall goes through without a hitch.

Okay, I read through the last link you posted. I thought to myself, well if I could at least get an error message or see exactly where the boot fails, it'd be a step in the right direction, right? So I took out quiet, splash, and for good measure ibt=off, since this is an AMD machine anyway. Rewrote grub, updated it. And well, now it boots with both kernel and no error whatsoever, so I guess I can conclude that something with grub was borked, something that did not throw an error, and just updating it fixed it all?
