Strange problem running Intel Quartus Prime Lite on Garuda KDE Dragonized

I’ve been trying to diagnose and solve something. I need to run Intel Quartus Prime Lite for FPGA development, and Garuda KDE Dragonized is my OS of choice… I have no intention of switching to anything else… but I’ve run into a weird problem…

There is some kind of weird glitch when running Quartus, where some important menu options are permanently greyed out and non-functional (everything in the “Create / Update” menu under File). Quartus is not officially supported on Arch Linux, but it does work fine except for this menu. The super weird thing is that I discovered this only happens on X11, not Wayland. There’s no way I’m switching to Wayland though, not for quite some time anyway.

The important point about this issue, is that I have tried EndeavourOS with KDE and X11 and Quartus functions completely normally. So there is some unknown difference between the two distros that is affecting Quartus… even though they are both Arch-based. I just have run out of ideas on how to diagnose what is causing this. Starting Quartus from a terminal doesn’t produce any console errors unfortunately. Also both the AUR quartus-free package and Intel’s installer behave exactly the same.

Anyway, I just wanted to post this and see if anyone had any thoughts on what could be different with Garuda’s X11 server. For now I am using Quartus in a Virtualbox VM running EndeavourOS… but obviously that is not ideal.

I will include my garuda-inxi in case it means something to someone…

First thing, reboot, it’s KDE

Oh I’ve rebooted a million times. I’ve been trying to solve this for days.

I even did a fresh install of Garuda on another drive, and that’s how I discovered Quartus works properly on Wayland. But even on a fresh install with only Quartus added, that menu is broken in an X11 session.

There are a lot of differences between EOS and Garuda.

Are you running them both on the same kernel?

Yep, same 6.7.0-zen3-1-zen. I’ve tried the other kernels, Quartus doesn’t seem to behave any different.

Any other ideas for what to compare would be appreciated.

What is your method for installing it?

I’ve used both the AUR package which is version 21.1, and several different versions of the Linux installers directly from Intel, from version 18.1 all the way up to the latest 23.1. There doesn’t seem to be any advantage to using the AUR package as the install is contained to /opt and it’s out of date… and all installs behave the same regarding this bugged menu.

Again, the menu works fine in Wayland. Something’s just broken between Quartus and X11… but only on Garuda.

I meant what method are you using to install it on the EndeavourOS system, where it is working normally?

I used the Intel installer for the latest version 23.1. I assume the AUR 21.1 package would also work properly on EOS, but I haven’t tried it. I’ve tried a LOT of things, but not that combo yet.

Verified that the AUR Quartus Lite 21.1 package also works properly on EndeavourOS.

I don’t think the problem in Garuda has anything to do with the installers, behaviour is consistent across all Quartus versions and both install methods.

Start program via terminal. Post output. Maybe there’s something hinting at the problem there.

Unfortunately the terminal shows nothing… no visible errors.

alrighty… to see if the problem’s on your end or if it’s general, I set up a virtual Garuda KDE dragonized and selected X11 and installed the AUR version. In create/update everything is grayed out except for “Create/Update IPS file” and “Create board level boundary scan file” (with a new project, I have no idea what this program does). I have the same grayed and non grayed options under Wayland with an entirely new project.

So apparantly it works - at least up to this point - exactly the same on my virtual machine in X11 and Wayland.

That is what the menu looks like when it doesn’t work. They’re all greyed out except the IPS file option. But it also does this when you don’t have a file open to perform the other functions on.

In order to test it, you need to first open a schematic file. I will link one here. If you open the bdf file in Quartus and see the logic schematic, and then go to the Create/Update menu, more options should then be selectable, in particular the “create symbol files for current file” is the option I need to be able to use.

Edit: Very strange indeed. I could recreate the problem like that. I have something to do over the day, but I’ll install KDE lite edition of Garuda in the evening and try it there, it should, but it’ll give us a hint if it’s personalisation in the X11 KDE of dragonized or if it’s a general Garuda problem.

With KDE lite version of Garuda, it works on X11 as expected. So the problem isn’t “deep” in the system-changes Garuda makes, but somewhere superficial.

Unfortunately, I have no idea what those changes could be. To work through every change Dragonized does compared to KDE lite edition would be a little too time-consuming… but maybe one of the Dragonized-maintainers has some idea?

I wouldn’t bet on it though. It’s such a strange issue. That quartus gives no output whatsoever terminal-wise is also not helpful.

Confirmed. Garuda KDE Lite works for me as well.

So close, yet so far in figuring this out. Hopefully someone else has an idea where to look from here.
