SteamVR has a massive stutter in the headset and performance bar

Hello,

I am loving Garuda and it seems to be constantly getting better the more I use it.

The only thing left that keeps me from completely embracing Linux and ditching Windows is VR.
On Windows I have no issues at all, however on Linux it is unplayable. From the Start in SteamVR Home there is massive stutter at all times, which is visible on Performace Graph. I would post a screenshot however I am a new user so I am unable to.

I also noticed, that “Motion Smoothing is not supported on this GPU / driver version (requires asynchronous reprojection support)”.
I was under the impression it was added in recent NVIDIA driver, but I am unsure if this is not supported on Linux yet, but it may be the reason I have issues?

I am running the drivers provided by Garuda from the start (I am on Dragonized), of course updated to the newest version 555.58.02-1.

My GPU is RTX 4070 Ti, have 32GB RAM and I am on i9-13900KF so I should have plenty of juice.

Please let me know if you require more information, as I am a Linux noob still.

Just follow the template and post log as text from

garuda-inxi
  • After rebooting, post the FULL output of garuda-inxi in the body of the post (not linked externally, or collapsed with the “hide details” feature)
  • Format terminal output (including your garuda-inxi) as a code block by clicking the preformatted text button (</>) , or put three tildes (~) above and below the text

Hope I did this correct:

Did you try X11 from login page?

Also please update to the latest Bios version for your motherboard as you are using a 13900kf

I should have mentioned, yes I have tried on both and the issue is the same on X11

Is there a safe way to do it? I have never done this and heard massive horror stories about this procedure

Updating your bios does have pitfalls but if it fails you have a z790 board and it allows you to do a usb flash if you break it :grinning: just follow your motherboards instructions and you will be fine

The safest way is to download the BIOS file, put it on an FAT32 formatted USB drive, go to BIOS and update from there. As mentioned by @TilliDie - check the manufacturer’s instructions from your mainboard BIOS page.
Personally, I did not have any failed BIOS or firmware update.
Also, please be aware, that currently Intel 13900 and 14900 CPUs might have degradation issues (random issues, often in games). BIOS updates might help, but not always. You might not encounter any issues, just be aware.

Ok so I went to my manufacturers website, downloaded the bios file, put it on the Fat32 stick, went into bios and instant flashed (as per instructions) the PC immediately restarted into black screen, the LEDs on the PC are on but not on my keyboard, I cannot see anything and I don’t even know if it worked or not, I am scared to restart my PC, is this normal??

Yes leave it to do it thing it will take a while and reboot a few times

Ok my PC is weird, I actually had to press power button and press it again to actually update. Then it went into boot loop, but after entering Boot Menu I managed to go into Linux, so it seems to be okay now, I will post new garuda-inxi below just in case you need it, will test the VR now

I also see this in the settings, don’t know if this is related, I mentioned it in original post:

I have tried it on both, yes, both have the same issue, not sure why, as I am running on the latest drivers provided by Garuda (which I assume are the latest proprietary drivers), and now the latest BIOS as well

I wish I could help you more and test further. But I do not have an VR headset and I am running AMD hardware.
