Steam Wont Run from KDE Plasma

As it states in the title, Steam wont launch from the icon on the desktop, or the launcher menu. It runs, you see the system is working to start it up, then it stops. This is a completely fresh Garuda install. A fresh install last week had no issues.

Following this github issue I attempted the fix and it didnt work.

I am not sure what else I can share. Please let me know.

Edit: When I run steam from cli, it “does more”. I still cant see anything; cant use it, but at least it provides more logs - temp file share link.

Edit2: Deleting the .steam and .local/Share/Steam folders, as well as running steam --reset doesn’t make a difference.

Some ideas to try:

  • Have you tried completely uninstalling and re-installing Stream through pacman, incl. dependencies?
  • Any noticable difference between runtime and native version?
  • Steam UI uses 3D acceleration.
    • Are your graphics drivers OK?
    • Have you been able to run any 3D game or other 3D application successfully?
    • Try re-installing them just to be sure. (package nvidia-dkms)
  • Steam does work on Wayland, but trying to run Steam in a X11 session might be a worthwhile test to help find the issue.

Also, I found this in your Steam logs:

[2025-06-13 23:02:23] Response: gpu_topology {
  gpus {
    id: 1
    name: "Intel(R) Iris(R) Xe Graphics (ADL GT2)"
    vram_size_bytes: 50301044736
    driver_id: k_EGpuDriverId_MesaIntel
    driver_version_major: 25
    driver_version_minor: 1
    driver_version_patch: 3
  }
  default_gpu_id: 1
}

That’s probably not the graphics card your monitor is connected to?

  1. No. I know that this image is preloaded and preconfigured in many ways and didn’t want to undo any optimizations that might exist.
  2. same same
  3. I don’t have any other games, well, none that I installed myself.
  4. I ran it like this just a few days ago with no issue (e.g. fresh image install, update, run steam, install game, play), so I do in fact trust that it should work in Wayland.
  5. I saw that too, but I don’t know how to change that. The its a laptop. The primary display uses whatever is selected as the primary display adapter. Since this is a fresh install, I can’t claim to know what the installer has selected for it. But again, a few days ago a fresh install worked perfectly fine.

I will try to reinstall nvidia-dkms first, then steam if that doesn’t work.

Edit: it appears nvidia-dkms was never installed to begin with. Why would that happen?

After installing nvidia-dkms I am now getting the window opened with some errors.

Game not recognized as DOSbox compatible.

and

DOSBox argument error: “unrecognized arguments: -d3d12”

Have you rebooted after installing the nvidia driver? Also, after making a major change to the drivers, and then getting weird errors like this I would really uninstall steam sudo pacman -R steam, delete the .steam folder, then install it again with sudo pacman -S steam. Should do no harm, worst case you have to download the games again.

Is there anything I need to do to tell the system to use the nvidia GPU? I don’t know if it helps or hurts the system to just use it all the time or to use it when needed for 3d rendering (i also render models).

Reinstalling the only game I use is going to take a very long time so probably no updates on this anytime soon.

I actually disabled the onboard graphics on my PC in UEFI (f.k.a. BIOS) to avoid issues like this. However, doing this on a laptop could have a negative effect on battery consumption, I presume.

As to your question how to force a certain monitor graphics card to be primary system-wide for all applications, my best guess would be the “Display Configuration” (right click the desktop) - but maybe someone from the Garuda team can provide more insight on this.

But without the garuda-inxi ? How ?
open konsole → command : garuda-inxi

  • Format terminal output (including your garuda-inxi) as a code block by clicking the preformatted text button (</>) , or put three tildes (~) above and below the text

You have not the correct nvidia driver installed. You need the open driver.

Without garuda-inxi this request will be moved to 4xx Client Error > 412 Precondition Failed

I typically install nvidia nueveau, which as far as I know are the open source drivers. In this case though, I’d assumed this was already done as it had been done a week ago, which @magdux had deduced wasn’t actually done. So I was at the mercy of his suggestions to simply find the reason that I could’t open steam to begin with. I will be doing yet another clean install tonight, this time with mokka, and I will try to see how\why it was missed.

As for your claim to the following:

Requests which fail basic precondition checks. For example you are not running Garuda Linux, did not search for a solution first, or you did not provide the information required to render assistance.

I did provide enough, just read the first post and check the edits if you must.

For posterity, I will add the inxi anyway.

No, there is no dual boot.

Also, since the installer never asks which driver you’d like to use, I assume it just chooses the driver you selected at the bootloader selection. If that’s the case, I absolutely 110% selected the open source option.

So far, is this ok, only this

Now, your issue with the nvidia driver.

Pls deinstall your nvidia-dkms driver with all dependencies over konsole.
sudo pacman -R garuda-nvidia-config nvidia-dkms nvidia-settings nvidia-utils opencl-nvidia libxnvctrl lib32-nvidia-utils lib32-opencl-nvidia gwe python-py3nvml.
If you read errors during uninstallation pls post the error log or step by step deinstall.
Then, reboot, open konsole and install over pacman the open stuff.
sudo pacman -S nvidia-open-dkms
You need the 32. bit stuff pls install this too. (sudo pacman -S lib32-nvidia-utils)
Reboot → post your inxi again + pacman -Qs nvidia

For testing if your system is using your nvidia-gpu.
Run a game + open konsole command nvidia-smi + use htop or btop to see if your dgpu is used.
If you don´t need your igpu, pls deactivate it via the bios
or install nvidia-prime to handle your dgpu for working with games etc.
If you run in trouble with suspend or wake up stuff, we type us here again. (my mind)
