Report everything you have already attempted to solve your problem.

I launched Steam for the first time in a few days , and steam reported that it was unable to connect to the steam network and will only operate in offline mode.

I tried switching to Windows (dual-boot) and verified that the issue is not with the Steam network [edit: meaning, I successfully connected and logged in under windows]. I also tried switching to a fresh user with no existing steam configs, and the issue persists, suggesting that the issue is not in my user files. No other apps on my computer are having connectivity issues, and nothing has changed on my local network.

Steam also initially reported that it was unable to set up the steam runtime, which I resolved by running steam-runtime --reset. Steam was able to launch inspite of this error, and the network problem persisted both before and after the reset.

The only recent incident, aside from running the most recent updates (paru -Syu), is that a couple of hours ago my machine inexplicably filled my swap to capacity and reported a low memory issue, even though my system memory was below 25% usage. I ran swapoff -a at the recommendation of a post online, which caused my system to crash. Following a force-reboot, I ran swapon -a to re-enable swap. I'm not sure if this could be related, but it is the only "breaking" issue that I could imagine affecting steam.

I'm not sure if this could be a dependency issue caused by a recent update, or if there could be some sort of corruption due to the swap bug, or something else entirely. Any ideas?

This means it’s Steam only with an issue so don’t start changing settings or reinstalling software or whatever. You could try resetting your router to see if routes or DNS hostnames have changed (and so need to be cleared).

Also worth noting that the Steam winter sale just started up not long ago, and sales like those end up overwhelming their servers. I find this site helps a lot with seeing Steam's server status: https://steamstat.us/

Welcome to the Garuda community.

I hope you don't mind, but I have moved your thread from the networking support section to the newbie section as this is not a Garuda networking issue. This is a steam specific issue and has nothing to do with Garuda's network configuration.

Good luck with getting steam functioning properly.

No-go on the router reset. I restarted both my router and my Pi-Hole to no avail. If there is an issue with DNS cacheing, it would have to be local, as I was able to log into Steam when booting into Windows on the same hardware.

Unless steam is running different authentication servers for Windows and Linux clients, I don't think this is it. I am able to reliably log in when I switch to Windows, but not in Garuda.

Thanks. I thought I put this in the general Issues category, but I must have selected incorrectly.

I’m not a steam user, but I was just wondering if this use of the beta version can play a role…

See my suggestion on a related topic:

Hmm.

A couple of days ago Steam went offline for me, but I just rebooted router and Steam started working again. I didn't think anything else about it.

There’s another similar thread here:

Still no luck, I've tried downgrading steam to 1.0.0.73-1, deleting all of my steam configs, rebooting, connecting to a public wifi hotspot to eliminate firewall/DNS issues, and every possible combination of the above. In all cases, I am unable to get a network connection in Steam.

Are you still getting this same message in your terminal output?

If so, can you load that URL in a browser?

Yes, the URL loads in a browser and downloads a text file, but I was unable to figure out how to make any practical use of it. That does prove that the URL isn't being blocked on my home network.

Exactly - the issue is something specific to Steam itself (or your setup or addons, e.g. Firejail, MangoHUD, steamtinkerlaunch, …).

Yeah, downgrading steam isn't going to help here because steam is for all intents and purposes capable of self updating itself fully.
The steam package only really provides:

  1. Base dependencies that can't be packed into the steam runtime/are necessary before the steam runtime initializes
  2. The steam bootstrap files
  3. The steam launcher files

Can you try deleting every file in .local/share/Steam except the steamapps folder?

@TNE I've deleted the entire .local/share/Steam, along with the .steam folder, multiple times in the course of troubleshooting. I have most of my games installed to an external drive, so steamapps was virtually empty.

@jonathon I don't have firejail, and I've never used steamtinkerlaunch. I don't know why mangohud would interfere, but I tried uninstalling that just in case with no luck. The only other programs I actually use that interact with steam are Lutris and ProtonUp. I've never really used Lutris with steam and didn't see any unusual settings in the runner, and removing ProtonUp didn't do anything....

Is this external drive formatted as a Linux native file system? If so, which format, ext4, btrfs?

ext4 filesystem

Technically both my boot drive and my storage drive have windows (NTFS) partitions, but I don't use those in linux except to occasionally access files from my windows install.
