So, the issue. I don’t manage to make Windows game to work with Proton. Native Linux games work like a charm. My games (Pathfinder Wrath of the righteous, Ori and the blind Forest and Ori and the Will o’ wisps) were working perfectly under my previous UbuntuStudio 22.04 with the exact same hardware. But the issue is not Garuda related : I had the exact same bugs when I tried Fedora 40 and UbuntuStudio 24.04.

Here’s a console log I took when trying to run Pathfinder :

(process:859948): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: 21:49:28.828: g_object_unref: assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

As far as I’ve searched, there’s no real error here.

NVidia drivers are OK (tried 525, 535, 550 and 560 with different distros), the 32 bits architecture is enabled, tried with Steam Native, Steam Runtime, LSI, even tried with different options using Lutris without success.

It’s not Wayland related, the bugs are the sames using Xorg.

I really don’t understand what’s going on as, as said before, everything was running fine on the same hardware with UbuntuStudio 22.04…

My main lead is the problem might come from Pipewire, as it’s the sound server on the 3 distributions I’ve tried, I have no sound with the said games (although the bugs are not the same, Pathfinder crashes at launch when Ori can be launched but it’s not playable) and it was absent from Ubuntu 22.04. But the few fixes I’ve tried were in vain.

I hope someone will be able to help, because I’ve searched for two weeks on the web without finding…

Thanks for reading !

And I’ll add than except that issue, Garuda is a fantastic system, the fastest I had, I’m very happy with it !

I would first try to test different Proton versions, try experimental:
Steam → right click game → Properties → Compatibility:

If you suspect Pipewire, you can play with the settings in Garuda Assistant:

I might test Ori (though, I have AMD hardware).

EDIT: downloaded the first Ori, started, working without any issues or additional tinkering. Even ProtonDB says Platinum, so should run just fine.
My setup: Steam Native plus Proton-GE-Custom from Garuda Gamer.

Thanks for your input. I have already tried numerous Proton versions, even Proton GE actually. And as said in my 1st post, these games were running smooth on my previous system using Ubuntu 22.04, exact same hardware.

I’ve tried to disable Pipewire and install Pulseaudio. Ran through some dependencies errors at 1st but finally managed to do it. And then, strange thing : I managed to launch Pathfinder once, although with no sound, but after closing it I ran through the same error (a grey window giving a Unity error, but too fast and small to be read). Ori was bugged the same as usual, so it might not be Pipewire… which kind of makes me happy because I need Pipewire for my audio apps (I’m an amateur musician). Thanx to the goodness of snapshots, I came back to the original system state. But the plot thickens…

I did not see you mentioning, if you have tested other Linux kernels. For example, try LTS, it helped fix some issues/regressions from the ZEN one, for some people here.

I’ll give it a try, though I’ve tried with Ubuntu 24.04 and Fedora 40 which don’t feature the Zen kernel. Thanks for giving me leads !

No success. Even tried the 5.15 lts kernel, but same error…

Before running your game with proton, add PROTON_LOG = 1 %command% in the game’s launch options, there will be a log file at root of the home directory after the game exits. Paste the output of that log file.

idk this looks interesting with some related language and errors: [SOLVED] Steam failing to launch since systemd 253.5-2 update / Applications & Desktop Environments / Arch Linux Forums

I’m quite successfully running WOTR under heroic game launcher. I am using the GOG version though (it shouldn’t make a difference).

That’s strange. I don’t find the file, but the command alters the way the game bugs. It bugs sooner, I don’t even have the 1st launching screen I have without the command.

Edit : there’s a .crash file in Steam’s home directory, but it’s empty.

Installed both libraries mentioned in your link, but it didn’t solve the problem. Thanx though.

You say you ran your games with Lutris, well for those games outside of steam that did not run:
1.Get into the directory where the game exe is located.
2.Open a terminal in that directory.
3.run : wine (game exe name).exe

Gather the logs after running directly from terminal and post the output here.

It’s quite long, had to put it in a file :

Console log

And here’s the message from Wine’s frontend :

Frontend log

Running a steam game outside of steam with lutris and standard wine will only give errors.

Try running a non steam game in lutris and get the logs by right clicking on the game after you have tried to run the game and it fails to launch.

You can also apply a crack to a LEGITIMATE game that you own in steam, in the game’s files which you can obtain from steam. Where to get the crack and stuff, I cant tell ya as my recent post was flagged down so a quick google search and some redditing should get you done. This is also one way in which you can test steam games outside of steam in lutris.

Post the log output once you are done.

Sorry for the time, was under loads of work these days.

And I’ve misunderstood your message at first, installed a windows game with Lutris (The Witcher 3, which works flawlessly now I’ve found the right VKV3D version to use, even with everything set to max (Ray Tracing, anti-aliasing, etc…). Will search for this way to test a steam game outside of Steam.

Thanks again mate.

So your Non-Steam games work fine in Lutris but Steam games do not work ? Strange. You have your Steam games installed on a ext4 or btrfs drive ?

It’s a btrfs drive. Didn’t think about that must say.

So now I can recommend you to run : sudo pacman -R garuda-nvidia-config garuda-nvidia-prime-config && sudo pacman -S linux-lts linux-lts-headers nvidia-open-dkms and reboot to check further developments on the issue.

Also after the reboot, might wanna launch steam from cli with PROTON_LOG =1 steam due to which steam will absolutely store a log file of the game launched with Proton in your home directory which should help diagnose the issue.

1st a big thanks for the time you spend trying to resolve my problem. I really do appreciate this.

Got a little question : by “cli”, you mean running it through a terminal with the command PROTON_LOG =1 steam ?
