Garuda (2.5.6-2):
  System install date: 2021-10-17
  Last full system update: 2022-03-26
  Is partially upgraded: No
  Relevant software: NetworkManager
Windows dual boot: Probably (Run as root to verify)
  Snapshots: Snapper
  Failed units: fancontrol.service

So recently rebooted after kernel update and now steam detects a xbox360 controller even when no controllers are connected and now any controllers i plug in can control the steam interface but not games.

first thing I tried was loading a snapshot before the update and no dice seems like it might of been an even older update but i just realized snapper is configured to only save the last 10 snapshots ( and every time I update aur packages it makes a backup for each of them)

next I tried a lts kernel to see if that would help, same thing.

tried opting out of the steam beta, same thing

tried going back into the steam beta , same thing.

also tried unplugging all usbs

EDIT: also tried the various steam input settings for hiding controllers and rearranging them

EDIT2: some screen shots

You might have to change the controller list priority (for one player, two player, etc), and/or hide that "phantom" controller. (Both suggestions are done within Steam)

Seen this sort of thing on a friend's Garuda setup after using a new type of controller (ps5), and it sounds like you have a similar issue so I hope that fixes it for you too.

Im also using a ps5 (dualsense) controller

forgot to mention that I have had issues like this before where some 3 party controllers were detected as two seperate controllers.

the hide option in the big picture controller settings seem to not be apply for the phantom 360 controller (it seems to hide it but it just immeditly comes back and on the controller order steam input settings in the game overlay don't even list my controller (only shows the phantom 360 controller even though big pictures settings do see it and im able to navigate the interface with it)

Hmm, if you are still having issues and the ps5 controller is listed as the first one priority wise; you might have to enable controller support for everything (or at the very least everything except Nintendo controllers). Not sure why Steam has been weird like this lately, but I've had to do that recently to get controllers to work.

I also disabled the touchpad support (mouse) for the ps4/5 controllers in KDE settings. That might help too.

well got the 360 controller to hide (had to use a mouse to do that as if i did it on the controller by pressing triangle it would just unhide immediately for some reason) That allows my other controllers (including my PS5 dualsense) to work in games so I guess i kinda solved the issue, but its still werid that steam created a random phantom xbox controller.

Glad to hear that fixed your issue as well.
I can't seem to find anything conclusive from searching around about why the "phantom" gamepad is there, but I can only guess that its picking up a "system" gamepad (or something similar; maybe a dummy profile) where it wasn't before. Seemed to happen after the gamepad changes to wine/proton too, but not sure if there is any direct correlation.

Don't forget to mark the post with the troubleshooting suggestion that has solved your issue as the Solution, so other people searching here can see easily :slightly_smiling_face:
