Steam dropping connection

Hi,

As the title says, Stem keeps dropping connection. When I open Steam I often get en error saying that it couldn't log me in. Doing steam --reset usually fixes that error. But as far as I can see it is random if I get it or not.

The other issue is when I already am logged in. I am downloading a game and it keeps dropping in and out constantly. Pic

I have tried disconnecting the Ethernet cable and used WiFi but that didn't do anything.

This is my first time using Linux as my main OS and I am dual-booting Win10 from another SSD for VR and unsupported games.

If it is just Steam, then it is probably Steam's servers. They have their much anticipated Winter Sale going on, and everyone is home for the holidays....gaming it up. I am sure their servers are being taxed.

Do an internet speed test (just google it!) and see if you are getting good internet speeds outside of Steam. If so, then it is a Steam issue.

I am pretty sure it isn't a server-side issue. I had the drop outs even before the winter sale and I am downloading on the Win10 install now and it is at my max internet speed without dropping out once.

Tried switching to another server and I had the same issue after a couple minutes.

I also found out that I get disconnected instantly when starting a download, and when I set it to stop trying I can log in again.

Yes but take steam out of the equation, as I directed above. How are your internet speeds, can you test?

It is at what I pay for

Then that rules out any network issue with Garuda, which means it is Steam's server.

Not sure why Microsoft is faster when downloading, too many variables, different steam servers....which btw fluctuate depending on how many are connected at that time, so ???

If you are getting your ISP's internet speeds otherwise, it is not Garuda.

You are the second person to bring this up in the last several days. A quick search on the forum suggests this was not a common issue in the past.

I am not a gamer and am totally unfamiliar with steam, however it might be worth downgrading steam to see if a recent update has caused this issue.

I think it has something to with the download cache now. When I cleared it, it seems like it works as it should.

Thought about downgrading, but I don't know if that is possible since Steam automatically looks for a new version at startup

Are you using the 'beta' version of Steam? If so, try switching to the standard version inside Steam's preferences and downloading. See if that makes a difference. If you are using the standard version, then switch to 'beta" and see if it is better.

Also, try rebooting your computer. If it is a certificate issue, there has been past issues with Steam/waking from sleep/hibernation and losing the certificate, a reboot usually works.

After I cleared the cache it works, but I will try the beta if it shows up again.

Thanks for your help guys!

Well, the log in error is back. I couldn't even get into Steam yesterday or today. I tried logging in on a laptop with Arch installed and that worked.

I switched to the beta program yesterday on the machine with Garuda and that didn't help and now I can't log into Steam so I can't change it back.

I think I am logging in though because the remote play popup came on the laptop with Arch.

I also tried uninstalling Steam native/runtime and rebooting before reinstalling and that didn't work.

Fixed it again by uninstalling steam and steam-native-runtime, then deleting ./local/share/Steam, rebooting and reinstalling.

Another fix was reported by a user with a similar problem:

It didn't fix it for me, sadly.

steam --reset and steam-native --reset has worked for me the last couple of days
