Issue description:

I’ve removed “steam native” package (forgot the exact name) by running garuda-health --fix as prompted by updater. Trying to run Steam using desktop icon did nothing, running steam from command line did nothing and it didn’t produce any output in console.

Note that when I first installed Garuda, both the “runtime” and “native” versions of Steam seemed to work. (Each had it’s own desktop icon.) If I remember correctly, the “runtime” version might not have worked for a while and I might have been unconsciously running the native version for a while, the error with runtime manifested just because I was pushed to remove the native package.

Attempted fix:

I’ve tried to fix it by following steps (miltiple times):

killall steam or restart system so that ps aux | grep steam shows no processes (except the grep). Sometimes there were Steam processes remaining from trying to run it, even after killing the console. (There is no steam icon in taskbar indicating it’s running, so I’m checking using ps to ensure that I’m starting with clean slate.)
rm ~/.steam and rm ~/.local/share/Steam to ensure I’m starting with clean slate
reinstalled steam package few times

I’ve also checked package integrity just in case to prove I didn’t to anything weird to the steam package and binaries and scripts are as they should be:

Each time the run freezes on last line you see and nothing more happens even if I leave it untouched for a while. I’ve tried the process from clean slate (described in “Attempted fix” section) multiple times, and it’s pretty consistent. First time it freezes at >200MB, then it downloads rest, then it freezes in installing. (In one run it failed at different download amout and I had to go trough the “download phase” 3 times.) In the first run I see nice progress bar window, then nothing. Subsequent runs don’t show anything in GUI. I can’t see Steam icon in status bar.

Speculation about possible issues:

From what I’ve seen online, after initial steam runtime download (the “nice looking” progress-bar) I should see traditional ugly steam update window (probably during the time I see the >400MB being downloaded in console). I don’t see any such windows.

Maybe it’s related to this error you can see in console:

SteamUpdateUI: An X Error occurred
X Error of failed request:  BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)

I’ve seen report of similar issue. In that case solving the “X error” solved not being able to run steam. But that post is really old. I don’t have files in locations specified in the post, and the package names differ. In general I’ve found many instances where changing version of some random library or Nvidia driver fixed Steam, but all those posts are old and package names are usually different or they don’t exist.

libgl

I’ve checked if I have any 32-bit package with “libgl” in name installed, as that was core of the issue in many case I’ve found online. The only relevant-looking package I found was lib32-libglvnd and I have that installed ( Required By lib32-glu lib32-gst-plugins-base-libs lib32-gtk3 lib32-libva lib32-mesa lib32-nvidia-580xx-utils lib32-sdl3 lib32-v4l-utils steam)

Note:

I’m aware about this topic. But I don’t get any indication of missing libraries, and without further logs from the OP of that topic it’s not possible to judge if we have same issue. The details in that thread are quite sparse. So I’m opening new topic.

Conclusion:

Please help me to fix this. I haven’t played Crysis for 4 days, I’ve tried everything I could to fix this, I’m out of ideas. I don’t remember doing anything non-standard that would point me to the issue.

You’ve got some kind of frankenstein NVIDIA going on.

sudo pacman -S garuda-hardware-profile-nvidia nvidia-dkms lib32-nvidia-utils lib32-opencl-nvidia opencl-nvidia

That should fix it.

Reboot and try again.

I don’t know why exactly I have these packages installed. I remember that a while back some “580” packages were provided as a resolution for some conflict, I don’t know if it was during an update, manual install of some package, manual removal of some package or Garuda health fix. At that time it seemed like only sensible option (I didn’t notice most of my Nvidia packages are v590). Sadly I don’t remember more details.

Thank you very much for help. I have executed command you provided and confirmed removal of few packages with “580” in the name. This fixed my issue.

(Note for anyone with same issue: I have tested the fix only with backed up steam home directories, the issue was the same and fix should work also on clean slate.)
