:rotating_light: Facing Unprecedented Issues with Garuda Gnome’s Gaming Edition :rotating_light:

Hey fellow Garuda users! I’ve been a dedicated user of Garuda Gnome’s Gaming Edition for over 2 years now, and I’ve recently encountered some perplexing issues that I’ve never faced before. :face_with_monocle: Here’s a detailed breakdown:

:one: Update Woes with Garuda Assistant:
Using the Garuda Assistant tool to update the system has become a nightmare. Errors related to failures in connecting to Arch mirrors have become a frequent occurrence, disrupting my seamless update experience. (I mean it doesnt update at all due to the errors !!)

:two: Browsing Blues:
Post these update issues, my browsers have slowed down significantly. In fact, during my tests, they seem to be endlessly loading content, making searching for anything online a painstakingly slow process.

:three: Strange Encounters After Enabling DNS and Adblocker System-Wide:
The trouble seems to have started when I enabled DNS and Adblocker system-wide. I began facing incessant prompts for CDN captcha checks from Cloudflare, which not only affected my searches on Searx but also resulted in Discord acting erratically – bombarding me with captchas, logging me off, and requesting phone verification, despite never registering a phone number on Discord’s desktop client app ((( Big F U, discorders !!! ))).

:four: Update and Browsing Impossibilities:
After a few days, updating the system became impossible, as described earlier. Browsing, unless I waited for an extensive period and continuously refreshed pages, also became nearly impractical.

:five: Community Inquiries:
After scouring various forums, I couldn’t find anyone facing a similar issue. I’ve tried cleaning caches, setting DNS to default, disabling the system-wide adblocker, and refreshing mirror selections, all with no success.

:six: Puzzling Coincidence or Targeted Measures?
I’m left wondering – is this a coincidence, or am I the subject of some unwarranted defensive measures, like those suspicious Cloudflare captchas? Is there a chance that these networking issues are unrelated to the seemingly correlated events?

:seven: Culprit Hypothesis:
Could it be Pamac? Although I usually update from CMDL or Garuda Assistant, I’m considering whether an unnoticed update through Pamac might have caused these troubles.

Let’s pool our collective wisdom! :brain: Has anyone else encountered such issues? Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Let’s get to the bottom of this together! :man_detective: #GarudaIssues #LinuxTroubles #CommunityHelp

I am assuming the DNS was set using garuda assistant → Settings? Try setting it to ā€œcloudflareā€ and reboot for it to take affect and I see that you have tried refreshing mirrors can you try this,

garuda-update remote fix

PS: I tried another OS on the same machine, windows, and there is no issues there. So that confirms the issue is specifically arising from from garuda.

I apologize for the slight oversight, and I may have not mentioned the details extensively, but I have tried EVERYTHING in the dns settings, including seeing whether it is possible that changing it to other more prominent DNS services would have fixed the problem. I tried switching to cloudflare, quad9, adgaurrd, default,

however i have only tested these DNS services properly w/ rebooting with: cloudflare, and the default [option setting]. And after rebooting into those, I can say that none have practically had any significant effect in terms of fixing the browsing issue, or updating from the mirrors issue.

I am testing an update again via another method (suggested by some in another forum), via: 'update' command. And I have also choised for the second 'dbus...' options to see if that differs ?!"

Edit: of course its not going to be doing anything different with that update method, am I stupid ? lol

On the side:
If you update frequently, you can do without the mirror list. upd --skip-mirrorlist This saves time.

You seem like a very competent user. However, even competent users sometimes miss very basic troubleshooting steps that might help narrow down the list of potential causes.

This is where many Windows users suffer from false preconceptions. Windows and Linux are very different and the only thing this proves is that the hardware in use works with Windows. I have seen many examples where hardware will work correctly on Windows, but in Linux it can fail. Network cabling will often work correctly with Windows, but the same cable may cause reduced speeds or connectivity issues in Linux. Most drivers are written specifically for Windows, and sometimes you will never get the same performance using a reverse engineered Linux driver. I’m simply trying to say that comparisons with Windows aren’t particularly helpful as there are huge diffences between the two OS’s.

There are numerous basic things you might want to test to see if improvements can be made. Answering the following questions may help us help you:

Have you tested a live Garuda Gnome environment?

Have you tested a live Garuda KDE environment?

Have you tested a live Garuda XFCE environment?

When testing alternate live environments are there any major differences? Please list any differences you encounter using various live environments.

Have you rebooted your router?

Have you tested using Ethernet instead of WiFi? String a temporary Ethernet cable for troubleshooting purposes, (if possible).

Is your bios is up to date?

Have you tested alternate kernels? Try at least 3, and report on which you have tested and the results?

Generally it is advised to only deal with one specific problem per thread on the forum. It may be better to deal with connectivity issues on one thread and update issues on a separate thread. This helps to keep individual threads more focused, less cluttered, and easier to find information. Long threads with over 100 posts become too cumbersome to follow for forum assistants and many helpers avoid these jumbled types of threads for this reason.

Please answer my questions as thoroughly as possible and it may help pinpoint where your problems are originating.

I tested with other linux distros that were available to me atm (fedora), and it works fine. Is that something you wanted to know? If you want to see garuda test specifically, then I could fetch thst when I get ahold of my thumb drive. Either way, I have never experienced this before -

I have tested with qtile and q3 garuda versions before, if you must know (I mean, yea I tested them before this issue had risen). And they worked flawlessly in terms of connectivity.

I have been using garudas gnome gaming edition for a long time, and it just pretty much recently that I am seeing this.

So you are suggesting that I log in a live environment or plugin an Ethernet and test each and every kernel ?

And rebooting my router ? It’s not really a router, it’s a hotpost shared by my phone - and yes I usually turn it off an on.

Testing w/ KDE and XFCE env’s ? I wonder what effect that has other than changing the preferred network manager ? But I’ll still give it a shot if somehow that also indicates changing my networking settings to some default state is going to have any effects,

While these are good considerations, I still find it hard to believe that my machine could so easily have its connectivity affected when messing with the DNS settings and the adblocker. IF anythin, it’s probably whatever resulted from me changing the dns settings, and then changing it back to default.

Is this correct?

  1. Partially upgraded
  2. Failed units
  3. 4GB RAM
  4. Gaming problems

These all seem to be interrelated, don’t they?

That is possible.

However, I dont see how 3 and 4 are related ?

Solve the first 2, then you’ll know. It’s farked the way it is. Expect more failures.

Does the slow connectivity happen even when you’re not using a hotspot? Also, how are you using it? USB tether?
If you’re using it wirelessly, try a 2.4GHz AP band instead of a 5GHz one. After that, see if you can update.

I get those annoying CAPTCHAs all the time, but that’s because of my browser (Librewolf). It’s the usability-security tradeoff. It doesn’t sound like you’ve changed browsers, though. What browser are you using?
I’ve never tried the system-wide adblocker, but it makes sense that you’re being hit with the security measures, because you’re technically blocking requests, and those requests could be crucial to fingerprinting and that sort of stuff.

This is probably completely unrelated, but try setting your NVMe drive to AHCI mode in the BIOS. There’s been a number of problems linked to RAID in the past.

Also, you’re quite brave to use GNOME on 8GB RAM… or maybe my other laptop that I tried it on is just really potato.

Hello there, Noctis (also nice to meet you xD).

Also I have tried brave, chromium, firedragon, firefox, brave, librewolf… they all were being slow. Also let me mention that these tests were conducted before and after disabling the systemwide ad-blocker.

One thing I have not tried yet is using a live environment garuda on my pc (I dont know wheres my USB !!!)…

But I have still found something even more inconsistent than ever - just 12 days ago there was a forum posted about people complaining about garuda updates not working properly from the mirrors (not something I am facing particularly, but it definitely converges, and it tells me that some changes were put in place - and that indicator could help me know if the new changes that were put in place are the cause of my problem … )

… - to be more specific, the inconsistencies that I am talking about; I tried logging in from a Guest user on the same machine, which should have given me a simulation of config files being set to default, the connectivity issues still persists, and nothing is resolved. Updating is also the same. I mean it’s practically not connected at some points, throwing in that ā€˜?’ question-mark logo on my connectivity-level bar (to indicate that it cannot find or connect to my network). And yes I am using hotspot, wireless. Have been doing so since the previous releases with no problems - except of these recent times now. It’s been more than a month or so.

I have also tested with LTS and Zen (as suggested by one admin here, @tbg ). Same thing, same issue, nothing resolved. I’ll try with a live environment though and report back at some point.
