Severe lock-ups

System locks up/crashes when starting most games. Optimus Laptop.

Thinking it was something i've done, and made worse, by tinkering and fumbling, i've done another fresh install of Garuda, and completely wiped all my Steam folders, starting from a clean system.

Started by installing Dota 2 for testing, as it allows specifically selecting Vulkan/GL, and is Linux native, to rule out Proton issues. (any smaller games for this?)

First run, the game freezes at Valve logo (Audio continues). SysRq + R, E will get me back to login screen (How do I re-start the wifi network after login?)

After reboot, and starting Dota 2 again, the game loads and I can access settings, and see that Vulkan is activated. I went to start a bot match, but the game had already frozen (mouse still working, cannot alt+tab or alt+f4)

For testing, I installed Ubuntu 22.10 on another partition, and don't have this issue. The nvidia-settings on Ubuntu also shows me settings for prime-offloading, Garuda does not.

Really stuck here! Thanks guys.

Not sure why this has been moved to Unsupported Software. It is a fresh install of Garuda. Nothing added that wasn't in the initial setup assistant, except Dota 2, for testing.

Do you start the games with prime-run?

Normally, if it's an intensive game I would, but this is a clean install, and I haven't forcibly invoked use of the NV GPU. Either way, it's shouldn't normally lock up like this. :-/

If you only have problems with games, or other specific application, and all other applications work fine, then the issue is with that specific program. We can’t know how to support every program on the planet :person_shrugging:

There were a lot of games (I don't run anything else GPU intensive on this machine), that were producing the same issue, hence completely wiping everything, and starting from a clean install.

Dota 2 is just the first one tested after a clean install, update, and reboot, which should be working fine, as it does on the Ubuntu partition, and my Steam Deck.

I've now tried a few games using Intel and NV GPU's, and I still can't see any pattern.

glxgears seems fine on both GPUs

Age of Mythology: both GPU's, working
Ashes of the Singularity Escalation: NV, lockup after a few mins of gameplay
Baldurs Gate Enhanced: Intel, working
Skyrim SE: NV, working
Fallout New Vegas: NV, working
GTA5: NV, working
Sims 4: Intel, lockup during menu (no user interaction). NV lockup after few mins of gameplay
X2 Threat: Intel, working, NV Lockup during loading.

Audio continues playing, including from web streaming in background, for a minute (until buffer empty?)

Once, using SysRq+E to return to login, and selecting Restart, the Garuda busy anim froze, no further response to any SysRq combos, but mouse pointer still active. System shutdown after brief press of Power button.

I honestly have no idea how to find out what is going on. I can't see any terminal output as I can't switch to it after a freeze. I have no idea what logs to check.
