Second monitor is not working anymore

I have dual boot here and no issues are happening on Windows. I have been using Garuda Linux for a few years, but I don’t know how to solve this issue.

When I execute xrandr:

My second monitor is not appearing anymore on xrandr logs, I don’t know why. When I reconnected the HDMI cable I was seeing this notification:

But my second monitor was still black. I decided to execute garuda-update here to see if it fixes the situation. This is current my garuda-inxi output:

Not sure if these logs help, but I will leave it here.

I appreciate any help. I don’t know what to do. The HDMI is not working anymore and I need it to continue working.

The HDMI port is connected to the nVidia dGPU.
Your garuda-inxi does not show any ports on the nVidia dGPU (HDMI, DP).

Have you tried setting the nVidia dGPU as the primary GPU (prime)?
Are graphics-intensive applications (e.g. games) running on the dGPU and what does nvidia-smi say?

Edit: At the moment it looks like nVidia driver issues to me. Try reinstalling the nVidia drivers. And then please post a current garuda-inxi.

I don’t know much about this stuff… Just a few routinary suggestions. Have you tried:

  • a different HDMI cable
  • a live USB
  • login to x11 instead of wayland
  • a different kernel

?

I can confirm this is the case for me to, prior to running garuda-update I had two external screens working - now this is no longer the case.

I don’t know yet what is causing the issue - its probably some package dependency that is installed during update.

Any pointers to help troubleshoot would be appreciated.

I can confirm that rolling back is solving the issue for now.

It’s quite “good” that someone else has the same problem, the more information the better.
@l0k3y please post your garuda-inxi and the output of garuda-update.

@BlackLaptopScreen Since when and in what possible context have you had the issue, even after a garuda-update?

The dGPU is not recognized correctly and incompletely (missing HDMI/DP ports):

This indicates a driver issue. It could also be that there is a conflict between the optimus manager and the nVidia drivers.

Yeah thats what I am suspecting since after update the optimus-manager service is falling to start post garuda-update

Turns out the similar issue was logged with optimus-manager mantinershttps://github.com/Askannz/optimus-manager/issues/457

When I have min will test switching packages.

I saw that here too:

But:

That’s why:

Yeah…the last python update…left some users in a mess :upside_down_face:

An optimus manager not starting as a result could be the cause of the (driver) issue / dGPU not being activated correctly.

Edit:

Simply remove the optimus-manager (garuda-optimus-manager-config) and install garuda-nvidia-prime-config instead.

Thanks, I managed to update successfully and both external screens are still working.

This is what I did:

  • Remove optimus-manager packages and dependencies etc.
paru -R garuda-optimus-manager-config optimus-manager optimus-manager-qt and reboot - strangely both screens are still working (could be my nvidia X11 config files?) :person_shrugging:
  • Run garuda-update and reboot - both screens are still working.
  • Install garuda-nvidia-prime-config and reboot - both screens are still working

The problem is the Optimus Manager, if you remove it everything works again. But you need garuda-nvidia-prime-config to be able to switch between GPUs.

The OP and the OP from the other thread (and you probably too) have an old installation (Raptor or earlier). Optimus Manager was standard back then, but was (IIRC) replaced by garuda-nvidia-prime-config at some point.

Hello, I followed your instructions:

  1. I executed paru -R garuda-optimus-manager-config optimus-manager optimus-manager-qt and rebooted the computer (second monitor is still not working).
  2. I ran garuda-update and rebooted the computer (second monitor is still not working).
  3. I tried to run pamac install garuda-nvidia-prime-config but got this error: nvidia-utils-beta=565.57.01 required by nvidia-beta-dkms.

Any attempt to proceed results in errors. I tried removing nvidia-utils-beta along with its dependent packages, such as nvidia-prime, lib32-nvidia-utils-beta, and nvidia-settings, but each attempt was blocked by further dependencies, including python-py3nvml and gwe. When I expanded the removal to include all related packages, the system calculated the removal of 16 packages totaling 1.1GB, including critical components like cuda and vulkan-driver. I’m hesitant to proceed with such a large removal without knowing if it’s safe or the best approach.

Both wayland or x11 has the same problem. I have two SSDs, one containing Windows, and the second monitor works normally when I boot on Windows.

EDIT: I kept trying to install this package. multiple times, suddenly it installed. The second monitor is still not working even after rebooting.

I verified here now by running the following command:

╰─λ # Check if 'garuda-nvidia-prime-config' is installed
pamac info garuda-nvidia-prime-config

# Check if 'garuda-nvidia-config' is installed

  1. gwe
  • Installed on 2024-12-30 as explicitly installed.

There is no critical package, it is best to uninstall the nvidia drivers and everything else that is from nvidia, including:

then reboot and install the meta package (contains all drivers and nvidia-prime etc.):

sudo pacman -S garuda-nvidia-prime-config

reboot.

btw:

Get used to rebooting after such actions…

Hello, this is my history of commands on the terminal. My second monitor is working again, but I don’t know exactly what solved it. I also do not know if I broke something on my system, if anyone knows if I made a severe mistake on my commands please let me know.

First
!!! Forget xrandr in a wayland session !!! Only X11 session !!!
If, use wlr-randr to configure.
If you don`t know what solved your issue after all these steps how can someone else know ?
The new nvidia driver + optimus (no prime) was the issue. Now you have nvidia + prime. (my mind)
Sometimes, only the result is :+1: and must be enough :upside_down_face:
