Runaway PIDs due to BTRFS?

Hello,

First off, I love the distro. Very low resource usage and runs great on my machine...except for this one issue :slight_smile:

When I first boot, I see (with 'ps -A') approximately 5-7000 pids have been used, but the 'ps' commands PID jumps up to around 12k. Strange to me that it isn't a smaller gap, but ok.

Then after an hour of work I had to check something and looked at the process ID's again. Now I am up into the 100,000's? I have never seen PID's grow that high so quickly before (my debian server downstairs has been running over a year, with a moderate load and only has PID's at 130k). After a couple more days I am up above 2 million for the PID's?!!!? Once I work for another 2-3 days I get to 4.1M PID's and then I can't get my computer to turn off the screen saver with mouse/keyboard and I have to ssh in and reboot (ssh works and the system is responsive even though I am at/near the PID limit).

I think the PID's should just wrap and start using low numbers that aren't currently in use, but that is secondary to the actual problem: why are these PID's jumping up at such a rate?

I run about 80-100 tabs open in Firefox at any given time, so I thought maybe there was an issue with Firefox caching and btrfs, but I still get the issue even if I close almost all programs and just check the PID's every once in a while.

The kworker/u24:0-btrfs-* (and other kworkers) are always near the bottom of the following output and are increasing the PID's. I thought kworkers were threads and shouldn't be assigned new PID's? Any ideas as to why this would be happening?

Here is what 'ps -A' outputs after a few days running:

Those two things are unlikely to be related.

This was introduced in systemd 243:

I’d guess your Debian is a couple of versions older (unless you’re running a backport or you’ve just today updated to Bullseye?).

Linux 5.10.56 is the current LTS kernel, but Gtk3 3.24.30 is available. Just as with Arch, partial upgrades are not supported. Make sure your system is fully up-to-date.

Then, start checking your journal for clues.

All my machines with BTRFS or ZFS root volumes have extremely high PID values like yours. That is across many different distros. That being said, I have never seen any issues related to it so I have never investigated why that might be.

Thanks guys, it looks like it is probably a power management issue that causes the lock up with xfce4 (I found a thread that seems to indicate that anyways...will have to test). It was just strange that the screen went blank and unresponsive twice in a row when the PID's got up to 4.1M? And I have never seen PID's up that high before...but as @jonathon points out systemd-243 introduced the new higher limit back in Sept 2019 and I haven't installed/used many newer systems since then.

Anyways, if @dalto says they have the same situation without issues, then I will just let things run here and see what happens (after modifying the power management settings) :slight_smile:

P.S. Gtk 3.24.30 is installed...maybe not showing up in inxi due to no reboot?

OK, let's generate some higher-order PIDs and see what happens.

#!/bin/sh
parallel -j0 echo >/dev/null :::: <(seq 1 4194305)

(Anyone want to code golf this?)

Edit:

So, after leaving this running for a couple of hours, PID numbers have wrapped with zero sideeffects. Therefore, I am pretty confident that this is not the issue (as I originally thought).

Beat me to it, mine is still running :slight_smile: However, if things wrapped for you without issue, then I am sure it is not a problem with the PID's. I adjusted the xfce4 power manager settings and I haven't seen any issues yet, so hopefully it was just me jumping the gun on this. Sorry to be a bother.
