Hi,
I come from windows and this kind of check has very different funtionality compared to what I expected. I thought it’d make it the default app and always open it with the app not add it to the quick menu as shown here.
Is it possible to have it renamed to more clearly express what it does?
Best regards,
Gonzako
Hi there, welcome to the forum.
Yep, and there’s a simple reason for that: Linux is not Windows.
If you approach it with the attitude that everything on Linux is called, looks and works the same as on Windows, then you won’t get very far.
Garuda Linux can’t change anything, that would be the job of the developers of the respective desktop environment - according to your pic you use Plasma, so direct your complaint to KDE.
Please don’t get me wrong, but it doesn’t look like you know what you’re doing, it has nothing to do with any quick menu.
Also, you don’t even describe what exactly you want to do.
According to the picture you are trying to open the folder “gonzako” with something else than the default file manager dolphin
. Why?
Maybe you can find what you are looking for under System Settings → Default Applications? There you can change the default applications and file associations.
Hi,
I’m trying to set it up so I can open folders with neovim with the context menu here.
This is accomplished by clicking the “Always open X with the chosen app” which does not describe what it does. I’ll move my query to KDE.
Best regards,
Gonzako
Somehow I don’t understand you - what I do understand is that everything works as it should - except that the naming of the function bothers you. I don’t know anyone who has ever complained about this description, and for me personally the function is logical and correctly named. Why? This function has two options: if you simply select vim
to open the folder, then the folder is opened by default with dolphin
, for example, and vim
ends up in the context menu for selecting “Open with”. If you select vim
as standard to open the folder instead, then everything else (including dolphin
) will end up in the context menu under “Open with” and the folder will be opened with vim
by default.
Am I the only one who doesn’t understand the problem with the alleged wrong naming for this function, or does the OP have a luxury problem?
this might get you partly there. i dont use vim so i can say if it works,
but open dolphin settings an do the steps here.
Or you could try this here but you might have to make a .desktop file for vim for it to work an it might need some flags or something to work 100% but idk vim so you might just be fine with a .desktop file.
you can make a .desktop file in ~/.local/share/applications/
dont forget to make it executable. via the terminal or R clicking it and going into properties → permissions.
As for changing the wording,
Submit a request here https://bugs.kde.org/
That’s not what the OP is about, everything works as it should.
In his opinion, the name of this function is misleading:
Ahh I thought it was broken again. if not then ya the text could use some changing. or at least a (i) next to it with a better description.
For me the wording is logical.
But anyway, the whole thing is neither a Garuda Linux issue nor something Garuda Linux can fix. Plasma and Dolphin belong to KDE, and as I mentioned before, for a future request or “bugfix” the OP has to contact KDE.
