Without researching your driver fully I can't say if it's supported well in newer kernels. However, if you want the newest hardware support, installing the linux-mainline kernel usually is your best bet. That kernel has the most up to date hardware inclusions. However, it is also likely the kernel with the most new bugs as it is rather experimental in nature.
