I am more than willing to provide any other information you may need, just let me know what you need.
The first two steps I would take, in order, are...
Look for an updated BIOS. Your Lenovo's is 2018.
And install and boot into a different kernel, either linux
or or linux-lts
and headers.
I'll try the different kernal. I don't know how to update my BIOS, but if the kernal approach doesn't work I will look up how.
There are several methods, depending on the age of your machine. If different kernels don't work, and if @tbg doesn't have any input (forum network guru), then I'll point you in that direction. I only have direct experience with Dells and it can be a somewhat delicate operation--depending.
The fact it did work is a real plus. Might only take a package downgrade.
regards
Disable MAC address randomization.
I have now tried the following:
Completely reinstalled Garuda Dragonized KDE. At first the WiFi worked perfectly, so I did a full system update by running
paru -Syu
The update was around 800-900mb so it took a while with my slow internet.
I then rebooted after the update was complete, and my WiFi issue was back.
No networks were listed for me to connect to. So, I plugged my ethernet cable in and ran
paru -Syu linux linux-lts
After it finished, I booted with linux-lts, WiFi issue unfortunately persisted.
Tried the same but booting with just "linux" kernal, WiFi issue still present.
I then did as @tbg suggested and disabled MAC address randomization through the Garuda Network helper tool thing. Rebooted, and my WiFi worked! I rebooted again to make sure it wasn't just a fluke,
but unfortunately it was just a fluke and the same WiFi issue was back.
I then tried booting with linux and linux-lts having MAC address randomization disabled, but neither worked. The last time I booted, it looked like I had a connection, and I managed to ping google.com but then it stopped working again and I lost connection to the WiFi network. No networks were found when I tried to connect again, no networks listed.
I really don't know what to do now. Is there maybe some sort of log file I could paste here that could help?
I appreciate all the assistance you have provided me so far. Thank you.
Reboot your router and computer.
Make sure MAC address filtering is not enabled in your router.
If power cycling your router did not improve your connectivity then a full reset of your router may be required, see link below:
Edit (see above Re router):
Are you dual booting Windows?
Have you tried deleting, then recreating your connections profile in Network Manager?
Check that your WiFi isn't blocked by rfkill (post output):
rfkill list all
Block IPv6 usage either in your router settings or in Network Manager.
I'm not dual booting windows.
I will try all these things tomorrow, I am going to sleep now.
Output for sudo rfkill list all
0: ideapad_wlan: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
1: ideapad_bluetooth: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: no
2: hci0: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: no
I deleted my connection's profile in NetworkManager with
nmcli connection delete "my_ssid"
which gave me this output
Connection 'my_ssid' (4d6153c4-3122-42e1-81cc-75c250e1d760) successfully deleted.
I then tried reconnecting to the network by running
nmcli device wifi connect "my_ssid" password "my_wifi_password"
which gave me this output
Error: No Wi-Fi device found.
Did you reboot both your router and computer after disabling MAC randomization?
Have you completely powered down you computer by removing all power sources. Disconnect power line, backup UPS, battery pack?
If so, and still no love, I would suggest resetting both your router and your computers bios to the factory default.
Your bios is very outdated, it requires updating.
Please confirm prior recommendations have been completed before requesting further assistance.
I did reboot both my router and my laptop after I disabled MAC randomisation.
I will try updating my bios, and I'll factory reset my router again as well.
May I ask for an explanation as to why no WiFi networks are showing? There are about 6 networks where I'm living, although only 1 of them is mine and none of them show up when I try view the available WiFi networks. Not that I need to connect to the other 5 networks that aren't mine, but hypothetically if I wanted to view the available networks would they not show up if they aren't factory reset?
Like I said I'm at a beginner level when it comes to Linux, but I would like to learn. I'm particularly interested in how my BIOS not being updated affects my WiFi card only when I perform a system update with this one specific Linux distribution.
Thank you for your assistance. I will get back to you once I've updated my BIOS and factory reset my router again.
You are correct it is unlikely that the bios is the cause if the wifi works on other distros. However it is possible that differences between distros especially with kernels and firmware could affect your wifi usability with an outdated bios.
I would also check that your regulatory domain (regdom) is set correctly.
Also try restricting your router to either the 2.4 or 5 GHz bands to see if that makes any difference.
Be sure you are not using a hidden access point in your router.
Some other things to try:
Issues with ath10k adapters not being initialized at boot or dropped connections can sometimes be corrected with a kernel boot parameter.
Set Active-State Power Management (ASPM) to off at runtime.
Create a grub config backup:
cp /etc/default/grub /etc/default/grub.bak
Open the grub configuration file located in:
/etc/default/grub
Add the "pcie_aspm=off" kernel boot parameter to the the end of the grub load line.
The line you will need to edit will look similar to the line below:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet resume=UUID=e677590f-a8b0-49ad-a6a1-bed005449d2f"
There will be many other entries with btrfs used with Garuda.
Add this parameter at the end of that line:
pcie_aspm=off
The modified grub load line should now look similar to this (there will be many other entries with btrfs):
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet resume=UUID=e677590f-YOUR-NUMB-BERS-HEREo449d2f pcie_aspm=off"
After adding the boot parameter and saving your changes, run:
sudo update-grub
Reboot.
This parameter will disable pcie Active-State Power Management (ASPM).Using this parameter should have minimal impact on a laptop's run time while on battery.
Sometimes it is also best to add a further kernel boot parameter (as below) with Atheros wifi adapters:
pcie_aspm=off ath10k_core.skip_otp=y
Paste the following contents into a terminal:
nmcli networking off
sleep 1
sudo systemctl stop NetworkManager
sleep 1
sudo ip link set wlp2s0 down
sleep 1
sudo modprobe -r btusb
sleep 1
sudo rmmod -vf ath10k_pci
sleep 2
sudo rmmod -vf ath10k_core
sleep 2
sudo modprobe -v ath10k_pci
sleep 2
sudo ip link set wlp2s0 up
sleep 1
sudo systemctl start NetworkManager
sleep 2
nmcli networking on
Check your connectivity after running those commands. Post the outputs please.
You can also test this alternate version:
nmcli networking off
sleep 1
sudo systemctl stop NetworkManager
sleep 1
sudo ip link set wlp2s0 down
sleep 1
sudo modprobe -r btusb
sleep 1
sudo rmmod -vf ath10k_pci
sleep 2
sudo rmmod -vf ath10k_core
sleep 2
sudo modprobe -v ath10k_pci nohwcrypt=1
sleep 2
sudo ip link set wlp2s0 up
sleep 1
sudo systemctl start NetworkManager
sleep 2
nmcli networking on
Also please post:
sudo dmesg | grep -Ei 'error|fail|firm|deauth|qos|crda|regdom|cfg80211|alpha2|wl|blue' | grep -viE 'acpi|ras|nvidia|eth'
systemctl list-units | grep -iE '(net|dhcp|conn)'
systemctl --failed --all
lsmod |sort
Well I've waited a week for you to post the outputs I requested and to provide feedback to the numerous suggestions I gave to help with your issue.
I more or less wrote you the full chapter on Atheros wifi support in my super lengthy detailed response. You didn't even have the courtesy to respond to all my efforts to assist you.
This seems all too common with the flighty users Garada attracts. Sadly users like yourself are one of the reasons many Linux help volunteers get soured on assisting drive by distro hoppers who can't even be bothered to follow up the helps requests they open (after begging for assistance).
For those reading this post, if you think you're simply going to be given a single one line magic fix-all terminal command to resolve your issue (without you having to do any work yourself), then save everyone the headaches and just go back to Ubuntu, Windows or the Fruit based OS you came from.
Seriously, quit wasting everyone's time opening a networking help request if you have no intention of doing the work required to resolve your issue.
Don't call 911 if you have no intention of being there when the help arrives.
Thread locked.
PM a mod if you are ready to post the outputs requested and to provide feedback to the numerous suggestions given.
I only have time to post the outputs of the things you asked for right now. I will try your other suggestions soon and get back to you.
