I would like to view image thumbnails of .cr3 Raw photos taken with my Canon camera in Dolphin, so I don’t have to open Darktable for every single one. Darktable works fine to view them but I want the ability to cull quicker.

Steps I’ve taken to resolve:
google, which pointed me to out of date LibRaw as a possible solution. I checked and I am running the latest version of LibRaw. LibRaw also supports my camera model.
The same page pointed me to out of date exiv as another reason why Dolphin is unable to generate .cr3 thumbnails. Exiv is also up to date.

Is there anything else I can do to fix this?

First thing after update, restart the system, then try again.
It must not help, but maybe it does.

Do you have libopenraw installed?

sudo pacman -S libopenraw

libraw, libopenraw and dcraw are now installed and updated. Still no thumbnails for .cr3 files in dolphin.

I get raw thumbnails with just libopenraw installed, but I use Thunar instead of Dolphin and my camera is Olympus (so they are .ORF files). I’m not sure which of those two details is the one making a difference in my case.

The ArchWiki page for Dolphin (in the file previews section) recommends installing raw-thumbnailer from the AUR, although it does appear the package has not been updated for a long time. That doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t work, but there is a comment which suggests you may need to manually update the PKGBUILD in order to get it to work.

I did find a Rust rewrite of this project though, which is likely your best bet.

You can install it from the AUR with Paru.

paru -S miniaturo-git

Press Q to exit the PKGBUILD review and proceed with the build. I just installed it to test and it only took 1 minute 44 seconds to install, so not bad.

I was able to install raw-thumbnailer from the AUR and it is now working (I’m once again remembering the Arch Wiki exists and I really should be using it instead of crying to the forum every time. Thanks for putting up with me.
