I was trying to use the on screen keyboard (which is called onboard)…

Everytime I try to move the mouse over it, it crashes. Same thing if I try to use it in the lock screen…

That is what my terminal window sees. Oddly enough there isn’t much of any tech support online talking about this. I suppose people don’t have much need for on screen keyboards.

It should be this long known bug.

There is a version in testing repo, so I hope it will arrive soon.

Have you tried installing Arch Linux - maliit-keyboard 2.3.1-3 (x86_64)

Though from what I read here How to enable virtual keyboard included in KDE? - #12 by rokejulianlockhart - Help - KDE Discuss There might be some issues.
@Fenris

Is this a replacement to Onboard? If so how do you load this automatically in the lock screen?

I’m not using KDE, it’s XFCE would you know if there would still be a problem?

i would say its a replacement as it was made for phones an tablets i think around the time ubuntu mobile was being made.

Ah xfce my mistake im not super knowledgeable on that one but it the documentation you should be able to enable it for the lock screen with a toggle here apps:screensaver:start [Xfce Docs]

but I cant say for sure.

I’m not sure if it has its own package, but there should be a gnome keyboard as well.

This is what I see…

I actually tried some of these Keyboard Alternatives, more specifically xvkbd at that point, I replaced onboard -e with xvkbd and the keyboard would no longer show up on my screen. Then I put it back to onboard -e and that stopped showing up on my lock screen completely.

Clearly something is wrong :sunglasses:

Nothing beats Onboard for an OSK.

Try this:

In the Onboard Settings configuration utility, go to the Keyboard Advanced tab.

Keyboard ------->

Advanced ------->

Select the following options from the drop down choices available:

Touch Input: none

Input event source: GTK

PS.

Do your eyes a favor and lose the ugly default Onboard Theme. Nightshade is my favorite Onboard skin by far.

This seems to stop it from crashing :face_with_monocle:

You mean something like this? …

This looks like my old IBM keyboard which I still like using. I can spill enough food into it feed the third world five times over and it never seems to break on me. If I try that with keyboards today, they don’t last long. I keep going through them like night workers. :sunglasses:

Glad that helped. :+1:

Cheers from the wet coast of Canada. :beers:

What’s the weather like ATM out in the flatlands?

Only had a touch of frost a few nights here, super warm for the Great White North.

Flowers are even blooming outside.

That’s a miniature palm tree in the background. :smile:

My mom was born in Winnipeg, so I can guess what it’s like there ATM. :cold_face:

Good luck to the Jet’s this season :ice_hockey:, and all the best during the holiday season as well. :gift:

Cold…I already seen a few semi trucks rolled over in the ditch on the main highway going into Ontairo. Highways are super slippery, blizzards everyday, the usual Winnipeg weather.

Yaaaa…that won’t last in this neck of the woods unfortunatly

Take me with you…I’m so tired of nothing but cold and flat >.<

Yes, merry christmas to you :evergreen_tree:, thank you
