Omarchy, a Garuda ripoff

DISCLAINER! The title sounds worse then what I have to ask

Hey guys! I was reading about this new distro flavor called Omarchy that is based on arch, kind of like Garuda, that uses Hyprland, kind of like Garuda Hyprland flavor that is basically that, a Garuda Hyprland with some strange key bindings and some default web apps.

I’ve been using Garuda Hyprland for the past 3 years now and after I took a closer look to Omarchy and I don’t get it . It’s just that. The only difference is that you have are some rounded corners and transition animations by default. But that is it…

I am just asking, is there anything special to Omarchy compared to the Hyprland flavor of Garuda other than is hyped by David Heinemeier Hansson?

My understanding is that Omarchy’s a preconfigured hyprland, not dissimilar from Garuda Hyprland, streamlined for coders/developers. To quote the site: “It ships with just about everything a modern software developer needs to be productive immediately.”

The difference, however, is that it’s still vanilla Arch underneath, whereas Garuda’s more of a distribution.

Yeah I’d also disagree with categorizing Omarchy that way. They both have Arch at the core, but they both take it very different directions.

Regardless of claims otherwise they’re still both distros.

That’s not a distro and it’s not ripping off anything from Garuda. There’s not much under the hood or if there is that’s clearly not what the hype is about. On their GitHub you can see it’s just an “Opinionated Arch/Hyprland Setup” with the target users being web developers. Very different than what Garuda is and aims to be.

Completely agree - this isn’t a distro in the same way that Garuda is a distro. Garuda has many system workflow customizations that simply don’t exist in Omarchy. It really is just vanilla arch with an “opinionated” Hyprland desktop configuration made for software development.
