Old *nix user, first time "Arched"

My first successful Linux install was via 14 diskettes downloaded over a 14.4 back in '96. I have since installed and played with Slackware, Redhat, Mandrake, Debian, FreeBSD, then later Fedora, Mandriva etc. I had to write my own XFree86.config file by hand uphill both ways in the snow. So no spring chicken. I then just wanted to play games so was CWOL [ computing with out Linux ] for years.

With win10 going EOL and me absolutely refusing to run win11 , i started looking for solutions, bought a new gaming rig first of the year which is licensed for win11-PRO but nuked win11 without ever launching it on this computer.

I was running OpendMandriva Rome. Steam installed without a hitch, started playing Starfield, Skyrim AE, FO4 all installed and ran.

Then Starfield started locking up on me randomly. OK I run a megacrapton of mods thru creations, so not terribly unexpected. Then it happens more and more frequently. Then other odd crap - the machine would hard lock once in a while, like hold down power button hard reset. Sometimes not for days, sometimes 2 minutes after booting for the day, sometimes after hours of hard use. No rhyme or reason.

So I nuked Rome for a .deb based distro, found a bug in the debian kernel existing in the current release affecting all debian based distros only fixed in the testing branch.

So I installed a Trixie variant - installed Starfield no probs, it launched once. Crashed steam every time I tried to launch it after.

So now here we are after searching for a gaming centered distro not based on .deb or .rpm I am so relieved an happy to report your native Steam installed Starfield without issue and I am currently running it with all of my mods (creations) installed and it’s smooth as silk.

So, Thanks a Billion for your efforts on my behalf.

Personally love Starfield. What kind of GPU are you running?

This is an Asus TUF16 Ryzen 7 and Raedon 7700s gaming rig  I avoided NVidia GPU because AMD fully supports and contributes to Linux while NV still has binary blob.

I was looking at some mini builds that use AMD for the same reason. I’m tired of my laptops nuking themselves, and am usually too cheap to build a system. ** we won’t be discussing Texas**

My first ever working Linux install was Slackware - on an AMD 486DX4/120 that spanked all intel offerings at the time. Guess I’ve always liked em

Hi there @Juan.

Nice to see another experienced Linux user getting the itch to try out an Arch based system.

There’s plenty of other long time Unix/Linux/BSD users kicking around the forum here as well. Of course you being a spring chicken, you had it pretty easy. Most of us real “old timers” had to carve our system config files on granite tablets, all while having to dodge packs of roving Tyrannosaurus back in the day. You damn kids had it so bloody easy growing up, FFFpt… :winking_face_with_tongue:

Welcome to the Garuda community.

Well after adding hours to the old playtime chronometer with absolutely zero problems … I didn’t even quicksave or trigger an autosave before opening enventory, char menus etc without a lock toward the end. I am so relieved you don’t even know.

Thanks again.

Welcome to Garuda, Juan! I hope your experience is as great as mine has been. I’m not a gamer, but I love how Garuda lets me make my system be whatever I want it to be/look the way I want it to look!
