Nvidia 5090 not working with Garuda Broadwing Dr460nized

I have been trying to get my system to run with the nvidia drivers for a discrete Nvidia 5090 adapter (founders edition if it matters). And cant seem to get it to work.

I installed the system, and when I startup I try to run

nvidia-smi

No devices were found

Is it too new and do I simply need to wait a bit? or is there some other way to get my system to run the nvidia drivers?

Here is the output of my garuda-inxi:

Hello LokiX11 and welcome in the Forum,

Did you checked for a bios update also the inxi say you need to reboot the computer.

Also read somewhere the nvidia 570.86.16 beta or 560.86.10 working but dont nail me with the 570 134.07 driver. ALSO I DONT KNOW (NEWER KERNEL)

Im not a nvidia user beside my older Laptop so wait please for more experienced user or Leader

Thanks Duke187. The reboot was likely because bottles updated and I had not rebooted, that said it shouldn’t have effected it. I did not think about the BIOS update, silly me. Doing that now and will try again and report back. If that does not work, will wait a bit before trying the older drivers to see if there is another fix. But who knows maybe the bios will help  Thanks again!

Updated firmware to latest firmware from earlier this year, and still cant get the card to show up in nvidia-smi or work in general. I did try disabling Resize-Bar as I had read on some general posts for Linux, as well as enabling IOMMU, both of which did not fix the issue either. Posting my latest garuda-inxi in hopes that there may be some additional detail someone can see that I may not be thinking of. Can try the versions that Duke187 mentioned but may wait before doing that in case there are any other insights.

The GPU is not recognized correctly.

And it looks like the wrong drivers are installed. The 5090 is not supported by the proprietary nvidia drivers, post the output from:

pacman -Qs nvidia

Only the nvidia-open drivers support the Blackwell GPUs, in your case for the linux-zen kernel you need nvidia-open-dkms.

Mmh… according to the Nvidia website the 570.133.07 Linux-aarch64 explicitly supports the RTX 5090: Driver Details | NVIDIA

  • I would try uninstalling nvidia-dkms with all dependencies, rebooting, and then re-installing it. That did help in the past when I had an issue after an update. Be prepared for a blank screen; make sure you have a snapshot you can access from the bootloader, just in case.

  • You could also try the BETA driver from the Nvidia website. Although the obvious downside is that this manual install will not update in the future, so even if it works you might want to switch back later.

  • If the issue is the combination with the zen Kernel, you could just get another one. Garuda Rani has a list to choose from, including default linux, lts, and cachyos.

Please learn the difference between arm64 and amd64 platform.

No, the proprietary nvidia-dkms driver is not recommended for Turing and newer GPUs and does not support Blackwell GPUs.

On Arch/archbased Linux, never install drivers from the nvidia website, but only from the official repositories.

Please do not recommend installing other kernels without installing the appropriate nvidia driver.

Thank for the help here. I saw that just before that it needs to be the Open drivers, will switch to that now: As requested, here is the pacman -Qs mvidia output, will report back shortly on the Open Drivers. Thanks again for the help.

Should I remove garuda-nvidia-config to update to the nvidia-open modules? Here is the output when I attempt to install

Edited as I did try with nvidia-open, instead of nvidia-open-dkms, problem the same however in that it cant replace nvidia-dkms, with nvidia-open-dkms due to the garuda-nvidia-config, dependency issue.

Yep, remove this first.

This is the wrong package (nvidia-open is for the linux kernel), you need the nvidia-open-dkms driver for the linux-zen kernel:

Thanks, I did notice that and updated the earlier thread as I did it and went through it.

I did remove with pacman -R garuda-nvidia-config and then installed the nvidia-open-dkms modules with yay. That appears to have fixed my issue, and I will now mark this one as solved. Thanks Nepti! Also thanks Duke187 and Magdux

We always mark here the solution and not the implementation.
I have changed the marked solution.
