No Option to Connect to Wifi

Hello all! After a fresh installation of Garuda dr460nized I have no option to connect to wifi. This seems to be a similar issue to one I encountered with Ubuntu 22.04 that actually prompted my switch to Garuda.

From the outputs below you'll find that my wifi card is detected, but appears to have no driver, resulting in the network unclaimed state (output of lshw -c Network).

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem would be wonderful! Previously I tried installing the iwlwifi backports when I ran Ubuntu 22.04 (sudo apt install backport-iwlwifi-dkms). However this only served to eliminate the unclaimed network issue, but did not restore full function to the wifi card.

Hi there, welcome to the forum!
Just a shot in the dark:

Looks like a kernel regression, like this:

So, I’d try some different kernels, back and forth, eg LTS kernel, linux, linux-mainline (and headers).

sudo pacman -S linux-lts linux-lts-headers

sudo pacman -S linux linux-headers

sudo pacman -S linux-mainline linux-mainline-headers

But honestly I’ve seen many issues like yours, on several distros, at a quick internet search. So chances are low… :crossed_fingers:

Hello and thank you for the suggestions! I'll let you know if the kernel swapping works; what I may do in addition is install the backport dkms for iwlwifi and reboot to see if this changes the behavior of iwlwifi.

One alternative I've also thought about is using an intermediary compatibility utility like NDISWrapper to try using the windows driver for my particular network controller.

This is usually not a good solution for modern wifi hardware. I would not recommend this route. I would suggest searching for and testing older, and newer versions of iwlwifi firmware on the Intel website, (and possibly Google Android developmental versions).

Thank you for the suggestion! I'll try that next; I booted with the three suggested kernels but had no difference in WiFi capability.

However, when I booted with linux-mainline I was able to successfully download and install the drivers for an external WiFi adapter I'd bought to address the near identical problem that occurred when I ran Ubuntu 22.04. I should add that the external WiFi adapter was incompatible with my Ubuntu but installed in seconds with my current Garuda setup.

The current kernel 6.1.12 should have fixed the issue. If that was the issue you were facing, of course. But it's worth trying...

Hello! I tried booting with the most recent Arch kernel, but to no avail. After some additional digging and troubleshooting I noticed something I hadn't before:

All of the relevant versions of iwlwifi available exist in my firmware library, however they're all compressed files. Similarly, if I search my relevant kernel directory I find that the relevant driver file is also a compressed archive file:

ls /usr/lib/modules/6.2.0-1-mainline/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/intel/iwlwifi/
drwxr-xr-x - root 22 Feb 11:30  dvm
drwxr-xr-x - root 22 Feb 11:30  mvm
.rw-r--r-- 329k root 20 Feb 05:18  iwlwifi.ko.zst

Is this related to my original network unclaimed error, or is this some naivety on my part? I can't reconcile the presence of the relevant drivers in both places, yet the output of lspci -vkn indicates that there is no driver in use for the wireless card:

00:14.3 0280: 8086:9df0 (rev 30)
DeviceName: WLAN
Subsystem: 8086:0000
Flags: fast devsel, IRQ 16
Memory at b121c000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel modules: iwlwifi

Any suggestions for new paths toward a solution? Since I have managed to achieve wifi access though a third party external adapter, the issue is less pressing than originally, but I do want to find a solution since this seems to be a fairly common problem.
