No Man's Sky via Steam Freeze then Crash

Hello All,
I am new to Garuda and am loving it. I switched from Windows months ago all is well except my Game No Man’s Sky occasionally freezes (Once or Twice a day or rarely not at all) with sound and then closes after a minute. It happens willy-nilly as far as I can tell.
So far I have tried switching Proton’s via Steam, and kernels in terminal (it did things and completed) as one post I found said not using zen worked for someone that had kinda the same issue alas today it froze again. the Journal errors report is a bit different today but I do see QML, sleep, hda and hub issues and seem to be the constant.

Any idea’s or direction to go where I can track this bug down would be great if not the solution. I’m not sure if its actually the Kernel or hda (a drive?) or what  but just looking for ppl with same problem or browsing for lines I see in the Journal error log hasn’t yield great results for me as of yet. Thanks

You say you have tried switching protons have you tried downloading Proton Tkg, instead of Proton GE? You can use protonup-qt for that, just select Proton Tkg and begin downloading what version of that you want.

i found that many of my games which had problems with proton or proton GE’s, worked completely perfect running Proton-Tkg, tho at times it took a little searching for the right version.

(Don’t forget you will have to reload Steam after you download a new proton)

First thank you for ur reply post.
I have not tried Proton Tkg. Its not in steam so i am unfamiliar with it. That will be tomorrows excursion event i suppose. To research what where and how. I may be back

Also if you haven’t yet - check on protondb to see if there’s any hints from other people.

As @fbodymechanic mentioned, you can find details on running games on Protondb. No Mans Sky has a Gold rating, so it should run pretty well.

I have checked protondb :+1: and did try a few things but still the crashes persist. I was hoping someone could decipher my crash report to give further clues.

Thank you for the reply, yes I have and yes it does run well until it doesn’t. I’m hoping someone could look at the crash report and give further direction if the report even has good info. Like should I do more with my kernel or stick with proton route. I just looked a bit into Proton tkg and that looks like a sort of experimental thing. I have to learn how to deploy it tho, I have no idea atm

Your wrote;
“I have to learn how to deploy it tho, I have no idea atm”

sudo pacman -S protonup-qt

then open your file manager
make sure hidden directories are visible (ctrl h)
select the ‘.steam’ directory.
and then again;
steam (folder)
and then right click and make a new folder called “compatibilitytoolsd”, if it does not exists yet. (without the quotations marks)
close file manager

Now open your panel’s main menu
type proton
select protonup-qt
(right at left top)
under 'Install for:
change the path to
$HOME"/.steam/steam/compatibilitytoolsd/"

then press Add version more towards the left bottom of the app.

It will display proton GE as default
press it and select proton Tkg
(it will give you the latest version as default.)
Download some, restart Steam, if you have it running, and select the game you want to run in proton, right click, select properties, and then compatibility mode, and the protons-tkg you downloaded, will be available to your games now. Experiment at will.

Cheers.

Okay first that was top notch dummy proof instructions and I thank you for that  2nd it seemed to work really well I was able to actually scan planets easier and everything seemed to run smoother. Bit i noticed almost right away there were no other ppl about. Somehow even tho multiplayer was on it didn’t seem active.
So since it was doing well and didn’t crash i took it for a test that always crashed eventually which was taking an exocraft out around the planet to farm some things. jumping in and out of the exocraft usually crashes the game after a while and just as I was about to call it a win the game crashed :weary: I will try and attach my Journal error.

Okay, so i’ve saw there was some Argyll fail which has to do with graphics if i remember right. So i was going to use amdgpu_top to watch the card but not sure yet if i can with Garuda. Some other post also said his card he found was no entirely supported in linux it froze when hitting 500Mz but his was a amd 5XXX mine is 7600. So in the mean time i decided to check crash report after boot and after crash. maybe someone that’s keen in reading these can see the a problem that can be fixed.

idk if nothing is found then maybe its just the game but I refuse to think there is nothing I can do lol

I know may be a random idea but some games I have trouble with and found they run fine on flat pack steam. You can run it alongside normal steam. Try installing that and installing another copy of no man’s sky and see how it goes.

I’ll try this thank you I appreciate the information. I did not even know what a flat pack was till you mentioned it. I also found that garuda has a pretty good overlay called Goverlay which i needed so i could make sure my GPU was on the up and up during a crash or at least what the stats were. Learning a lot in a few days via everyone’s input. :+1:

Okay so I haven’t installed flat pack yet but as I said I got goverlay up and running which shoes that my Junction Metric gets up to 110 c while my gpu and vram nvr gets over 7* c also I run three monitors and had the game running on my second which is the exact same type as monitor one. So i unplugged all but main and it made things worse so I plugged them back in and ran the game on monitor one and using proton 8 again I haven’t crashed yet… Using Goverlay I watch my temp and the GPU MHz and if either get to crazy i just slow down what i’m doing in game for a few seconds. IDK what the exact issue is but since i’m only having problems with No Man’s Sky at the moment I’m going to assume its the game and its taxation on my system and maybe Wayland and the three monitors but i have doubts on that one. Idk, I’ll continue to work on it and work the flat pack in later on just cause that seems like a neat thing.
