No internet connection: Temporary failure in name resolution

Hey guys,

a few hours ago, the internet suddenly stopped working on my garuda system. First I thought, it’s a problem with my router or provider, but all the other devices worked flawless (TV with netflix, mobile phone, etc.). Then I thought it might be the laptop itself, but when i booted into my long discarded windows installation, the internet worked without any problem.

It stopped while watching a longer youtube video when I tried to go to the youtube homepage, no reboot or anything and I’m quite sure also no system update shortly before (there are still like 180 updates to install, if I remember correctly).

I searched the internet for solutions and therefor tried to change the resolv.conf (which I seem to be not allowed to change, it kept it’s content) and I also tried solutions mentioned here (Installation failed and network problems - #3 by filo - iwlwifi, even usb tethering from phone is not working to establish a connection).

My resolv.conf:

Maybe someone can help me, I’ll keep on trying in the mean time.
If there is something missing, I’ll try to respond as fast as possible, as I have to switch between OS’ and keep copying stuff to USB and back lol.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT 2:
ping 8.8.8.8 or ping 1.1.1.1 results in 100% data loss

Be sure to reboot router, (other devices working is irrelevant).

Also try this:

(ping -c5 google.com 2>&1) && echo "true"

Post result please.

You can hard code/make immutable the /etc/resolv.conf file so that the DNS servers you select in /etc/resolv.conf cannot be altered.

To select/use the Cloudflare servers in /etc/resolv.conf, issue the following command:

echo -e "nameserver 1.1.1.1\nnameserver 1.0.0.1" | sudo tee /etc/resolv.conf

If you would prefer to use Google’s name servers, issue the following command:

echo -e "nameserver 8.8.8.8\nnameserver 8.8.4.4" | sudo tee /etc/resolv.conf

WRITE PROTECT THE RESOLV.CONF NAMESERVERS:

After changing your nameservers by editing /etc/resolv.conf write protect the file with the following command:

sudo chattr +i /etc/resolv.conf

The +i option (attribute) write protects the /etc/resolv.conf file on Linux so that no one can modify it - not even the root user.

If you need to remove the write protect attribute, use the following command:

sudo chattr -i /etc/resolv.conf

Hope something there helps @Tom.

Edit:

I would also “disable MAC adrress randomization”.

Hi @tbg thanks for your reply :slight_smile:

The router reboot did not lead to any changes.

Output of (ping -c5 google.com 2>&1) && echo “true”:

ping: google.com: Temporärer Fehler bei der Namensauflösung (Temporary failure in name resolution)

I changed the resolv.conf with the given commands to the cloudflare ones, but ping google still shows the same result, also after restart of NetworkManager.service

It seems, I found the cause. I’m using Proton VPN with autostart for browsing safely, and the server region I was using seems to stopped working out of a sudden. As it didn’t show any specific error, I thought it can’t connect because of my Internet connection not establishing. Closing Proton VPN or switching to another server solved the problem.

Thanks a lot for the help and useful information/commands about resolv.conf.
