After a few hours, my laptop locks up and requires turning off and back on agin. Which kernel I run makes no difference. It could be hardware-related, I don’t know. I started doing this a couple months ago.

I’m at a loss deciphering this. Last bootup locked up 5:30 after it started.

Maybe you can answer all questions?

Is that a few hours of use, idle time, or both? Also what do you mean by lock up? Blank screen? Does tty work when pressing the F1-7 keys?

The pointer becomes erratic, and doesn’t open an appliction, then freezes completely. CTRL-ALT-F2 doesn’t work at all. Mostly idle time, but it has happened while being used.

The last time, the screen went black and would display no input.

For TTY it must be Ctrl + ALt + F3 until Ctrl + ALt + F6.

Ctrl + ALt + F1 is your workspace.
Ctrl + ALt + F2 show the login screen (no function possible).
So far on my notebook.

Please, edit your post until someone replies.

Your laptop has hybrid graphics, and this points to the graphics driver:

Possibly a TPM bug that affects the graphics driver and is the reason why the display manager freezes.

You can usually ignore this:

Poor ACPI implementation in the BIOS.

And this:

points to a broken ACPI table - the IVRS table points to non existant IOAPIC → BIOS Bug.

I strongly recommend updating the BIOS. You have:

The latest version should be v1.18 from 2020/08/18.
Fun fact: The BIOS update contains improvements for Linux…but it’s a win~1.exe^^

Got the BIOS, and of course wine doesn’t run it. Extracted the .exe, and there’s a 10.4kb file called H2OFFT.cat, which I presume is the BIOS file.

Don’t know what to do with it.

This is a Windows catalog file and not a BIOS binary.

Don’t try to perform a BIOS update under wine, wine is just a wrapper. Your laptop doesn’t have the ability to perform a BIOS update from a USB stick directly from the BIOS - you need Windows for that.

This doesn’t necessarily have to be the cause of your issue, I just addressed the few pieces of information from your shortened log. A complete journal would be more helpful

The laptop crashed during my radio show, which is most unacceptable. I bought a 2014 Dell Latitude and will use it.

Happy ending. Found a used recent Thinkpad for $180 on EBay, with a 6-core Ryzen and 8MB RAM and a 256GB SSD, with no OS installed, which was perfect for my needs. The identical laptop is on Amazon for $759.

There was a bug in mesa 1:24.3.1.x that mainly affected older AMD CPUs with Vega iGPU (freezing). Possibly ( :crystal_ball:) this was the cause for you too:

This:

would have been easier and cheaper than this:

But whatever, it’s your decision. Have fun with your new Thinkpad
