Monster Hunter Rise crashes immediately

I have been trying to run monster hunter rise recently and I seem to be having some kind of issue, that being said I don’t feel familiar enough with wine and steam on linux to figure out what output from the terminal is relevant or how to decipher what I’m looking at.

This is the full terminal output from opening steam to the game crashing during startup and the capcom error handler thingy appears, I have pre-loaded shaders turned off currently, though have also attempted with it turned on, I had read that it being on can cause issues.

Have you tried changing the proton version you use , i use proton-ge-custom with Monster Hunter Rise and game works perfect.

I have swapped between everything from experimental down to 4-something, I’m not sure how to add custom proton versions to steam

I’m not a gamer, but I see a package proton-ge-custom in the Chaotic-AUR.
Further information about it as usual in the AUR comments:
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/proton-ge-custom
And of course upstream:

download release of proton ge from here

unpack and put directory with contents here, but before that create compatibilitytools.d inside steam path below
~/.steam/steam/compatibilitytools.d/

choose proton ge on steam

that’s all

As filo mentioned, you can get it in the Chaotic-AUR.
Alternatively, there is also a proton-ge-custom-bin in the AUR that I personally use (at least in the past it seemed to work better with controllers compared to the other version). Either of these packages will be updated with a garuda-update -a and only hold onto that version; it makes it simple to set it for games and have it update and not worry about keeping on setting new versions per game manually.

If instead you need specific versions of proton-ge and would like a bit less automated feel, I would try using a version of the program protonup to download and manage proton versions.

I have attempted to use the ge-proton-8-25 now but the game still crashes immediately, I’ve attempted both verifying the files integrity through steam and completely reinstalling, as well as finding the wine prefix folder that is created and deleting that entirely so that it recreates it to no avail, I dunno how much information would be within the proton log but incase anybody can decipher whats going on.

https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/files/13695075/steam-1446780.log

Monster Hunter Rise should work “out of the box” as its verified and the reports are good at https://www.protondb.com/app/1446780

The log you sent only has two error lines:

32637.193:012c:0130:err:kerberos:kerberos_LsaApInitializePackage no Kerberos support, expect problems
32637.195:012c:0130:err:ntlm:ntlm_LsaApInitializePackage no NTLM support, expect problems

After searching a bit, all I can say for now is that I’m unsure if that is the full reason or not that is causing an outright crash. (There is usually more information attached to those errors from what I have seen with my search)

Other troubleshooting ideas:
First, I would double check your Steam->Settings->Compatibility page to make sure both “Enable Steam Play for supported titles” and also “other titles” are set to on, with “Run other titles with” set to Proton Experimental (don’t set to proton-ge here as that can cause issues; set it per game in the Library).
If that is all set correctly and it isn’t still working, I would try some common troubleshooting steps like disabling Steam Overlay for that game just in case.
If all troubleshooting seems exhausted, you might have a bad Steam installation and require a reinstall of Steam.

Edit:
Are any other games using Proton working for you, by the way?

Every other game using proton works without issue, which is why this seems so off, monster hunter world, persona 4, final fantasy 14 just to name a few.

Just noticed this game has Denuvo. Trying multiple different proton versions tend to trigger it as it counts as a separate “install”. (sometimes a window comes up with Denuvo warning having you wait until the next “install”…24 hours is most typical). If you done this all in the same day you most likely triggered it already.

The Steam page says “5 different PC within a day machine activation limit” for that game (proton installs are seen as different activations).
It might just be a matter of waiting now until you can try proton-ge for real on it after the wait period.

Oh lord, I think that is what the blank monster hunter rise page I’m getting is because the link does contain ‘denuvo’ in it. I always forget crap like that exists until I decide to buy a new graphics card and the people putting out reviews are like ‘i literally borrowed 3 peoples -insert name of companies- accounts because denuvo locks you out after 3 hardware changes’

Ya, Denuvo really stinks if you are trying to find a proton version that works best for the game.

Oh well, I guess I’ll have a nice whiskey and coke and try again on monday to let the timer run down, I am a bit curious why rise specifically was giving me issues with the steam versions of proton, in the meantime, I may just reinstall the game directly to the SSD I have garuda on rather than the drive I was putting all my storage onto, just to see if it would help as well. Back when I was on windows I used to notice that FF14 would give me really strange errors if it wasn’t on the first two partitions C or D, that being said, I’m literally running FF14 through the launcher in my windows10 partition via steam with proton, so I feel like wine alleviates whatever that odd behavior was.

I dont know why I find the fact that this just werks by enabling proton so funny compared to other games

I am unsure. I’ve poked around on the Steam forums for that game and even saw some Steam Deck owners having issues with it crashing on certain proton versions as well (even if the game is verified! :person_shrugging:)

It would be good if you would start from at least watchning any yt videos about Linux gaming setups, im sure your problems would be solved, as your system would be configured properly, i had only once issue with running only one game, and it was satisfactory, rest of games around 20, which im playing are working perfect.

But before i started linux gaming i did deep research on that topic

Alright, I think it was a combination of things, the game is running smoothly now, I had some amd-pro stuff installed from github attempting to get amd-amf encoding to appear in obs and later found that the way that worked for that say, a year ago, no longer works since obs 30 being released, and just didn’t uninstall all those drivers, and I believe for whatever reason, monster hunter rise was using (or attempting to use) those drivers, because when I originally got a successful run of the game it was at a mindblowing 3FPS, and uninstalling all the amf_amdgpu_pro and amdpro_vulkan stuff I installed while attempting to get OBS to give me my non-vaapi encoding has the game running and very smoothly along with the ge-proton-8-25.
