Microphone and sound issue

Hi. Since changing to Garuda (from Linux Mint 20.2) I had scheduled a Zoom meeting and found out that my mic is not working. So I tried to install Pulseaudio because I remembered that I had that on my other PC but that made things even worse so someone here reccomended that i removed that, which I did and the sound was working again, but not the mic. If I hoover over teh sound button in meny at the bottom it is gray and looks like it's not connected and says "not connected to the pulseaudio server". (Well I removed that didn't I??) If click on it i get the choise of VLC player and sound mixer. If I click sound mixer , vloume control comes up and it says "connecting to a pulseadio serv, lease wait" and then nothing happens. I have read the other post here where others had issues with sound but I could not apply the solution to my problem. the inxi shows that I don't have Pulseaudio and are running but Pipewire. How can I get it run all the way to the soundcontrol and get it to work? Any advise is appeciated. PS i don't know where to find the settings of the sound in Garuda assistant.

Hi, your post is heavy to read, text paragraphs would make it easier to read.

We need every time the full garuda-inx output, not only parts of them.

Ok, thanks for correction, did not think of that while writing in a hurry, sorry. I thought it would be enough with a snippet of the inxi… so here comes the full text.

I'm not sure but I suspect installing and removing pulseaudio may have wrecked pipewire-pulse.
Do you get the same output?

fish❯ pacman -Q pipewire pipewire-pulse pulseaudio
pipewire 1:0.3.67-1
pipewire-pulse 1:0.3.67-1
pipewire-pulse 1:0.3.67-1

Ok, it might have done something like you say. I get this result:

pulseaudio

Try pacman -S pipewire-pulse and hope it works.

Well, it's getting closer somehow.... Now the soundsymbol is white when i make a call there is a pulsating
ticking sound and this shows up in the volume control (which had nothing before). But the other end could still not hear me.

Skärmbild_2023-03-31_22-28-47

Disclaimer, I'm not familiar with any of this and I'm trying to guess.

Is there in pavucontrol (it's the one in the above screenshot) an option to choose between "stereo output" and "stereo duplex"? If so, choose duplex and see if it works.

Is the microphone problem only with Zoom or with other applications too?

I searched for 1002:1637 on linux-hardware, and noticed several failed probes including one on a MINIPC PN52, with a note saying "You are probably need to configure system for the device to work properly (modify kernel config, install firmware, etc.)".

This part

  Device-2: AMD ACP/ACP3X/ACP6x Audio Coprocessor driver: N/A
    alternate: snd_pci_acp3x, snd_rn_pci_acp3x, snd_pci_acp5x, snd_pci_acp6x,
    snd_acp_pci, snd_rpl_pci_acp6x, snd_pci_ps, snd_sof_amd_renoir,
    snd_sof_amd_rembrandt pcie: gen: 3 speed: 8 GT/s lanes: 16 link-max:
    gen: 4 speed: 16 GT/s bus-ID: 05:00.5 chip-ID: 1022:15e2 class-ID: 0480

makes me think perhaps there's some firmware to install for it, I guess sof-firmware has the snd_sof_amd_renoir but... I'm just guessing by the name.

While searching, I came across this advice (but for a different problem and pc)

echo 0 | sudo tee /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save
echo N | sudo tee /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save_controller

which may be worth trying. If that works,

echo options snd-hda-intel power_save=0 power_save_controller=N | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/hda.conf

to make it permanent.

:man_shrugging: This is all I could find, I hope someone knows better.

Sorry, nowhere to choose between "stereo output and "stereo duplex".
The mic problem is on every device, not only Zoom.
I installed sof-firmware but no change (unless I have to reboot, but then it might change again, mayby, unless I make it permenent?)

Sad to see that it could be something with the kernel, since that is deep water for me, have no clue what kernel is even less how to do something there... but I have to keep trying.
The part with "echo..." did nothing to make it work.

Thanks a lot so far.

Using an alternate kernel is a good bet, and thankfully it's made rather easy.
There's a guide here: Troubleshooting System Stutter, Lags, Freezes, and Hangs - #4 by tbg

edit: just in case, the stereo/duplex thing should be here
