Linux & Tech news 📰

I think in real figures it can be more than 3% as some people use it anonymously for being anonymous on internet.

Except those “btw, I run Arch” people?

Well, there are many other categories too , like those who have first time installed ubuntu and then run sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade and show it to others to pretend that they are hackers

I use...

...it's dated but it still works on most sites.

When I go to....

....here's what it says about my browser:

BROWSER

Headers:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/114.0.0.0 Safari/537.36

JavaScript:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/114.0.0.0 Safari/537.36

I'm apparently a Windows user, thus I'm reducing the number of Linux users counted.

Yeah, well, it thinks I'm in Albania. I'm actually in Seattle. 'Course I use a VPN...

Holy F--k @Colin! I don't know whether I should kill you or kiss you concerning your Kernel post. There are some things I'd rather not think about. Like how effing old I am.

I seem to memorialize my Linux usage according to the kernel used at that time. For instance, I started using Arch with Kernel 3.10, which was 2011, according to Wikipedia.

But I started my Linux journey with Kernel 1.0 (stable!) from a Walnut Creek CD-ROM. According to Wikipedia, that was in Spring '94. That's 30 in Human years and God alone only knows how long in Cat years!

I'm getting too effing old!

And compared to our Linux learning youngsters, I don't know a damn thing. And I've forgotten even more! They've got it so easy.

Oh you are such a linux noob starting that late  @Bro

I am! There are folks here that go way back.

EDIT: A little clarification.

When I started...I installed something called SLS Linux.
I quickly progressed to Slackware since I'd found a mentor who was willing to guide me in my journey, but he wouldn't talk to me until after I installed Slackware first. (He was such a great asshole, but now a great friend.)

I was extremely happy when SuSE burst on the scene, and I bought every boxed set they ever produced. I stayed with SuSE KDE through several iterations of their name.

But when KDE came up with Plasma (yuck!), me and about a million other KDE users switched to GNOME and I stayed there for a few years until switching to Xfce for a while, then finally back to KDE with ver. 3.5.

I've used, tested, and/or been a user of many, many distributions and forums along the way. When I say that Garuda is the hippest, slickest, most progressive out-of-the-box Linux I've ever had the honor of using, I really mean it.

To be honest I’d prefer neither option

If it makes you feel any better here’s the first computer I bought…

Those were the days…

Hey @Bro, this is how you calculate your cat years, forgot?

In this case, considering spring to be March-April, it’s already 4 months (0.333 years) after spring.

So,
29.333*9 = 263.997
That’s 264 cat years!!

:hushed: :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth: That was my first computer. I learned Basic on that. I had the add-ons; the printer which was maybe a 4 inch wide thermal tape output printer and backed up my programs on cassette tape recorder....yes with sound.

I never had access to a Z80/81 (and didn't know BASIC/BASICA at that time), but I gave one of our young engineers a slope layback problem to solve on his Sinclair and it took him longer than it took me to write out the solution by hand.
