Meganoob here, I have Windows 11 on a 1TB drive and I’m wanting to install Garuda to dual boot, Now a few weeks ago the “install beside” option in Garuda worked a treat, Resized the partition to a decent size for the OS itself and a few games, Applications etc… install went very smoothly.
Since then I did a full format of the drive, Reinstalled Windows 11, Then a few days later, Yesterday, I went to reinstall Garuda beside Windows, And upon the last section when it begins to install by creating the partition it fails and brings up the below window.
Hardware wise nothing has changed and no bios options have changed either, This is also the same Garuda ISO, I have tried several partition sizes, 500GB, 400, 50, All the way down to 10, Always the same error.
It worked without a itch last time yet now it doesn’t and nothing has changed, Any insight would be appreciated.
The error text in the linked screenshot is meaningless to me hence me saying “meganoob here”, It’s still odd that it worked a few weeks ago yet doesn’t now.
In this case it might be easier and faster if you boot your Windows and use the built-in disk management (diskmgmt.msc) to shrink the win partition (I think this only works with an admin account).
Edit: If that doesn’t work and it’s a fresh and virgin Windows installation, then simply install Windows again and partition it manually at the beginning of the setup process. It looks like you’ve chosen the automatic installation of Windows, in which case Windows will take the whole drive.
My personal guess would be that Microsoft messed up the GPT partition table. I’ve seen it in the past too many times with WinBLOWS. Typically creating a new partition table corrects the issue.
Do this and make a rando partition of the size you want I recommend 100GB+ give it some temp rando name. When you run the garuda installer pick replace partition then use the one you gave the temp name. Its what I did back when i had 1 drive an wanted to test some distros.
Since its a temp partition I recommend making it exfat. Since ntfs is dreadful and sometimes has issues. Since it will be made BTRFS anyway when you install.
