Kscreensaver causing input/output errors

kscreensaver causes system to lock up and crash forcing a hard powerdown. it also causes input/output error on several files on the ssd. when i apply a slideshow to the lock screen after several hours the machine stops responding and when i try to log back in then screen is still black.
