KDE Plasma freezing on Mokka

so, as I’ve mentioned before I recently reinstalled Garuda (as we all do, don’t we?) and decided to try Mokka. Lovely, except that… every now and again, KDE will freeze. Running programs aren’t affected, but taskbar and panels just lie there non-responsive.

Alt-tabbing works, system-wide shortcuts work (like I mapped KRunner to meta+r)… but that’s it. After a while it seems to refresh, and freeze again.

Ideas on troubleshooting this? (yeah yeah, I now I need to restart)

It might be some of your apps eating up your memory.
But usually in that case, the whole system freezes until the kernel stops the culprit.
Try checking your memory usage as it happens.

I have experienced exactly what you have experienced, but it is rare.

Think on the right driver for this dgpu. (nvidia-open-dkms)
To install over pacman or garuda-hardware-tool

garuda-hardware-tool

Over garuda-hardware-tool with the package garuda-hardware-profile-nvidia you install the right stuff for your system. (can’t test this)

Konsole pacman: about pacman -Qs nvidia you can see what is installed.
default uninstall:
sudo pacman -Rdd garuda-nvidia-config nvidia-dkms nvidia-settings nvidia-utils opencl-nvidia libxnvctrl lib32-nvidia-utils lib32-opencl-nvidia gwe python-py3nvml

then install without reboot and yes to all dependence if asked:

sudo pacman -S nvidia-open-dkms egl-wayland lib32-nvidia-utils lib32-opencl-nvidia nvidia-settings opencl-nvidia nvidia-utils nvidia-prime

Perhaps you need dxvk to install over paru (default is dxvk installed but not all packages)

paru -S dxvk package name
example: paru -S lib32-libdxvk-gplasync
reboot = ?

For this cpu = Tjunction max.: 100 °C
I hope that is not in idle mode. (95.0° C)

the one eating the most memory here seems to be FireDragon… which I’m using like I always used Vivaldi before…

looks like I just don’t have garuda-nvidia-config =p

yeah, this is a weird one. Ever since I bought this laptop, 5.5 years ago (jan 20), from Dell it’s always had a high temp, no matter the power profile, the OS (I used to run on Windows a bit over 3 years ago and it was the same), how clean I keep the fans, and what thermal paste I use… =/

if the system is completely idle, with no browser, nothing, it usually goes down to 60-something. if I have anything running on GUI, it almost peaks.

changed nvidia-open-dkms for nvidia-dkms, and it seems fine now. let’s reboot.

ok, rebooted fine. lets see if this solves stuff… and… oh, the full update icon is pulsing.

well, we’ve got 20 hours of uptime so far with no new freezes. Times like these is when I doubt when people say that computers are an exact science. Should be called informagic.

Something giving you trouble? Uninstall, reinstall, reboot. Magic. =p

5 days in… and the freeze showed up again =(
