KDE Plasma desktop not showing up after login from SDDM, after a new update.
It stays forever on a blank, grey loading screen.
It has been a few days now, and I was expecting an update would solve the issue.
But it never did, and I have been stuck on the last stable snapshot ever since.

  • kcminit_startup: Could not load the Qt platform plugin “wayland” in “” even though it was found. Same plugin list printed.

  • systemd --user: plasma-workspace-wayland.target: Bound to unit plasma-kwin_wayland.service, but unit isn’t active. Dependency failed for plasma-workspace-wayland.target; start failed with result ‘dependency’.

  • fcitx5: Failed to open wayland connection (occurs after compositor fails).

SDDM/greeter context

  • SDDM greeter starts on Wayland, then “wayland compositor finished” and the greeter restarts; later, reading and selecting /usr/share/wayland-sessions/plasma.desktop for user session on VT2.

  • sddm-helper-start-wayland: “kwin_core: Failed to open /dev/dri/card1 … No suitable DRM devices have been found” during greeter cycle too.

I found a similar issue here, possibly due to an Nvidia card, but I don’t have an Nvidia card. I have an integrated AMD one.
Their issue seemed to have been automatically solved with an update…

Also, booting with the LTS kernel didn’t work.
I tried skipping the vulkan-radeon package update, which didn’t work.

After a quick glance (so as to not damage my eyes), it appeared that user was also using their integrated AMD card.

Unless you have a pressing need for a specific Wayland feature, why not simply use X11 temporarily. I use programs that don’t work with Wayland, so I’m sticking to using an X session for a while longer.

Hmm, maybe they just concluded it wrong, blaming their Nvidia driver update…

The experience is way inferior to X11, both aesthetically and functionally.
I would rather stay on the working stable snapshot…

I was thinking of preventing the culprit package from updating. Any idea which package might be causing it?

I’m not sure what the culprit is, but both your cachyos kernels were updated. Perhaps you need to test alternate kernels such as linux , linux-lts , linux-zen , or linux-mainline.

I tested linux-lts along with linux-lts-headers, but still no luck. It’s the same.

Update:
If I log in to X11 session, log out and then log in to Wayland session, it works!
Otherwise it doesn’t…

There was a similar issue opened in our forum some time back:

But UltraBlack had to reinstall his system to fix it…
