KDE Dr460nized Gaming: KDE session gives all new user processes a nice value of -4

Is thing normal?

I never noticed this before but everything I open from my KDE session gets a nice value of -4.

This is causing a problem with gamemode… It’s not letting me renice things because it doesn’t like it starting at a default other than 0.

Where is my nice being set to -4? And why? I’ve looked everywhere I can think of.

I discovered not everything starts with -4, seems it’s mostly KDE programs. Other things I’ve checked seem to be -1. I’m wondering how it determines these values. Logging into a console VT my user account runs everything at nice 0, which is what I would expect. It definitely seems like it’s part of the KDE session that it gets set to different values but I have no idea where or why.

I figured out a workaround for gamemode hating -4 by using a wrapper script to set nice to 0 first… but I would just like to understand why this is necessary.

My post was marked as Unsupported Software and it should not have been. My issue is that KDE seems to be making almost everything start with a nice of -4. Yes this is causing issues for me with unsupported software, but that’s irrelevant for my question about this. The issue is KDE… unless KDE is unsupported software? Lol.

Is this normal on KDE? Or just Garuda Linux? I’ve never seen this before, but I don’t usually check. I don’t currently have any other KDE distros to compare.

Anyway this is a big pain. Everything I run from a Konsole is nice -4.

Please, someone explain to me why this is happening? It doesn’t seem like it should be this way. I’ve searched the internet to the best of my ability and found nothing… so I don’t think this is normal for most distros or DEs.

Apparently nobody understands your statement, “nice -4”.
How about a log as text?
The wrapper script as text?
Concrete examples?

And yes, games are not supported even if they are launched from KDE.
Here is the Garuda Linux forum, not the KDE, GNOME, Hyprland … etc. forum.

I agree that this topic should be classified as “unsupported,” which, as usual, means that formally it is not Garuda-related stuff, but it does not mean that it is not considered by anyone.
The issue is not about games, but about aspects (adjusting priorities of processes) that are purely Linux/Kernel and maybe DE/KDE related, for which I (at a quick search) found no reference in our most relevant packages in GitLab.
See for example:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Improving_performance#Adjusting_priorities_of_processes
I searched as much as possible in our GitLab (in the available time yesterday), but I haven’t found anything about Ananicy (maybe long ago we ued it?), nor specific configurations for Cgroups, etc.

I’m surprised at the responses here, and previous lack of responses. I did get help on reddit last night to figure out what it going on. I have the ananicy-cpp service running on my machine which I NEVER installed, I never even heard of it before.

This package, as well as the gamemode package, were installed on my system by default from day one… which was May 2023. I only discovered gamemode a few days ago, and It sounded good… then I was surprised to see it was already on my system all this time but I’ve never configured it.

I have Garuda Linux KDE Dr460nized Gaming Edition. Gaming Edition! So it makes complete sense it came with these things pre-installed. I just would expect it would be supported software if it was installed by default, and I would expect a lot of people here to know that it’s normal that the KDE Konsole always starts with a nice of -4 on this distribution, unless you change the default settings.

Now I have researched ananicy-cpp, figured out how to customize it. It’s a really neat program. It was easy to fix the gamemode problem by just disabling the renice feature of gamemode and letting ananicy-cpp handle that instead like it was already set up to do. RetroArch and DOSBox-X were not in the /etc/ananicy.d conf files so I just added them. Works beautifully now.

I love this distribution. I knew it was designed with gaming optimization features, but I couldn’t find info on these forums on how or what that meant exactly. Now I know… but it would have been nice to understand how it’s set up differently and what it’s doing by default.

You could take over that now, there are only people in the team who don’t have time to play because they take care of keeping Garuda Linux and the forum running.

And again, we try to help, but we can’t support or fix all software in the DE’s.

Honestly, I’d love to help with Garuda somehow in the future. I’ve never liked a Linux distro so much before.

Even though sometimes things get super frustrating… in the end that’s part of the fun. Hopefully this post will help others if they try to use gamemode and run into this.
