Jpeg XL (JXL) and AVIF Not Displaying Anymore for Unknown Reason

KDE is supposed to have full native support for both of these image formats in basically all their apps. However, some time in the semi-recent past, I noticed that thumbnails were not being generated for new .jxl or .avif images and I thought it could be my converter was producing corrupted outputs, since they also would fail to display in Gwenview. Then I tried some older .jxl and .avif images I had made that were correctly displaying their thumbnails and they also failed in Gwenview! I think the thumbnails only displayed because they had been created when everything was working and were not wiped out.

I waited a while to see if maybe it was an error that would get fixed in some future update to any of the related software packages, but it has been months and nothing. I have no idea what caused this to happen and I can’t find anyone else reporting similar errors here or any of the KDE-related sites I checked.

The only thing I can possibly think of is the mess that occurred during the Plasma upgrade (edit: I think it was the QT5 one) a decent while back where some of us, including myself, had to manually remove packages that were no longer supported/compatible or had newer versions of them that didn’t follow the standard versioning convention or whatever the issue was. But, if I removed something related to Gwenview and Dolphin’s ability to decode those images, which I think is something like kimageformat-plugins, wouldn’t that also affect regular .jpgs and .pngs and such? Those work fine, like expected.

The specific error I get is: “Gwenview cannot display documents of type image/jxl.” (or avif)

Can you check if you have kimageformats, libjxl and libavif installed?

i dont know about jxl


update but i read a github update about avif. maybe you will check in octopi =) if you have reinstall it with right click…

You probably only have kimageformats5 (QT5) installed, but you need kimageformats (QT6) - as @stefanwimmer128 already wrote.

Install with:

sudo pacman -S kimageformats

AVIF is not natively supported wiuth out doing at minimum what @stefanwimmer128 suggested. I found out when I got a huge folder of AVIF images and only in BigLinux did I have preview thumbnails. This is what I found when searching for a solution for myself.

Thanks for the help, everyone! I’m not marking any post as the solution, because literally all of them were. Libjxl and libavif were installed, but I had Octopi reinstall them. And kimageformats was also installed…but it indeed was the QT5 version and the 6 version was not installed. After having Octopi do the thing with those three packages, everything is working as expected! Huzzah! Now I can finally start saving space big time. :slight_smile:
Also, now this will be in the forum record, so it can hopefully help anyone else who may have something like this happen in the future.

Closing question: any idea how this may have happened? Like I stated in the OP, I’m guessing it might have had something to do with the overhaul debacle a while back. But I don’t know.

Likely that’s just Plasma 5 → 6, some optional deps changed

Although, since KDE has basically made it a new staple that they support these next-gen image formats out of the box, I’d say these dependencies are not so optional for using their desktop environment and apps. Lol.

By default only kimageformats5, libavif and libjxl are preinstalled - but not kimageformats. You have to install that explicitly.
