Issue with today's updates

I installed Garuda, rebooted, installed the updates when asks, rebooted only to be greeted with only a black screen, mouse, and the welcome app. could not logout via the keyboard, could not type to bring up Krunner, got nothing rightclicking. There does seem to be something in today’s updates that is causing this issue. I had RebornOS on the system working great and did it’s updates using Topgrade and after a reboot got the same as above only with the Dolphin windows I had open, Stacer launching, and Localsend launching. I rebooted and attempted a rollback and it would not take or something in the updates didn’t get rolled back cause landed back on the desktop with the same issue.

I chose to wipe the drive and reinstall and since I had reborn install online once I booted into the installed desktop exact same issue. I wiped again, Installed Dragonized Gaming, and once on the desktop all was good. Proceeded to do the updates, rebooted and as stated above ended up with the black screen, and the welcome app and unable to do anything. Tried click a few thing in the welcome app and nothing would launch. Going to do afresh install of Garuda but not the updates. I’ll run a manual garuda-update to the point I get the list and I’ll post that before doing anything else.

Using last working snapshot and

Everything else was a waste of time.

Edit:
I updated KDE for the second time today and restarted it now without any problems.

I was trying to determine if it might of been hardware related so explaining what steps I took was not a waste of time, nor were the steps I took.

My bad on forgetting to mention before doing the updates I took a manual snapshot. After I got the black screen I rebooted and attempted to boot to it and it would not boot it or something didn’t get rolled back when I did re restore.

BTW. You use zen kernel, maybe the 6.12 failed on your hardware, I use

Kernel Linux 6.6.63-1-lts

Try it, install also the lts headers.

you have only one snapshot?

Seems I forget some updates from today.

According to Snapper Tools there were 3 besides the one I created, and when I went to use one of the Snapshots from the Grub menu I had 4 to chose from. Zen kernel is installed by default. You may be on to something about the zen kernel. I usually keep an eye on whats going by and I know there were kernel updates but I could of sworn I did not see certain items for the kernel updating like I normally do. I’m willing to add the lts kernel, but my concern would be the updates. I assume I would be dsoing them after adding lts?

???

OK installed the lts and headers and rebooted and selected it. All went well. Did the updates and still the same issue. I have hime on a base install and Vivaldi for now.

Just wait some days for updates.
Nobody knows what’s wrong in this update (Total Download Size: 4283.65 MiB). New installation makes it more difficult to find the solution.
Again, works fine here and only some zen kernel user have problems.

Yea he should be fine for now. He only browses the net, checks email, and maybe watches the occasion movie on his machine so not getting the updates for awhile won’t hurt him. Thanks SGS.

LOL I should add Now I’m forced to wait to reboot. I don’t want a unwanted surprise myself.

Only good thing out of this is I built a new system yesterday. Missed the disaster by a day.

Had the same issue today. Tried using LTS for kernel and still a no go. Seems like the issue is related to Wayland as switching to X11 everything is working fine.

On Wayland after update.
No wallpaper, no dock, no application bar. Only thing that was working was terminal since it auto-launched on startup. Run plasmashell and it showed crashing due to kweather, kcalendar and merkuro contact even though they were installed and updated to their latest version.

You by chance have a list of the updates? Could be a lot of help figuring out the issue. Thanks

Yep, its definitely one of the Wayland related updates. Logged out of Wayland, into X11, run 5 days worth of updates, X11 still works, Wayland borked. These are the updates -

We are missing some lines from your garuda-inxi @xXWhackerXx

partially upgraded system is not supported by any OS, don’t do it.

Just wait for upstream fix

or use x11.

Happy weekend, I am out

First have a great weekend and again thanks for the help.

Now as for missing lines in garuda-inxi I don’t see how when I copied everything from konsole. Might it have to do with the fact that that garuda-inxi was run from the live environment and not a actual install? Either way I’ll add a fresh output in the morning.

Hamster1962 as for skipping the Wayland updates SGS is right you’ll most likely cause yourself a headache you don’t want. Others are sure it’s mesa and are simply downgrading it for now, and seem to be getting there systems to behave. Since Gary’s machine is pretty much barebones right now in the morning after I post the garuda-inxi I’ll attempt the update again and downgrade mesa before doing the reboot.

Ya, that’s why I’m still on X. A program I’ve relied heavily upon for years doesn’t work on Wayland, so I’m sticking to X11 for now.

Downgrading Mesa worked for me too. However, I was asked if I wanted to add it to the ‘Ignore’ list for now.
I’ll look out for a revised version and remove it from ‘Ignore’ ASAP.

Yea I stayed on x11 for a long time, but when more than once after updates my desktop was half its normal size in the middle of the screen with no way to force it back to normal that was it for me with x11.

I’m assuming by the below that the mesa update hasn’t hit the regular repos yet, so if I want to finish building up Gary’s system I will still need to do when first updates and downgrade mesa before doing the first reboot?

https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/mesa/

EDIT:

I just got the mesa update for my roommate, rebooted into Wayland and all looks good.

how did you get the extra fields in the BTRFS Assistant? I only have the following, no matter how wide I make the window (or search for right click ‘add field’)

Looking at the updates, there are some major changes with the move to stable Nvidia 565.77 and a new kernel version 6.12.3, as well as Vulkan stuff (which should affect desktop usage I guess). I’m about to update :crossed_fingers:

Just wanted to come in and say that I had this issue. spent two days trying everything me and my friend could think, of from switching kernel to reinstalling all packages to no avail.
today I just updated mesa and now everything works like nothing was wrong to begin with.
