i have an issue updating and get the following error message trying to update UEFI.dbx version 217 > 371.

The error reads Blocked executable in the ESP, ensure grub and shim are up to date: No ESP or BDP found.

Not sure what to do. For ever since steam keeps crashing the computer trying to update the shaders, not sure why.

I don’t think the two issues are related, I don’t know much about the UEFI.dbx update but it appears to be a Microsoft list of signatures with security problems and seems to be related to boot loaders.

About the shaders I would clear the shader cache and see if rebuilding it from scratch works, but to be honest, with your hardware, I would just disable the shader cache altogether.

The caching issue seems to have resolved itself, as well as the updating issue, for some reason. Not sure what made it go away.

BTW i would love to be able to turn off shader caching, for so much time seems wasted compiling those shaders, especially with games like The sims 4, but not quiet sure how to do that. Or if doing that would impact the performance of games like Cyberpunk, Doom Eternal, or Ark Ascended, for example.

You can disable the shader cache by:

  • Opening the Steam “Settings”;
  • Clicking on “Downloads”;
  • Scrolling to the bottom and unchecking “Enable Shader Pre-caching”.

That should also delete the cache you already have.

I personally haven’t found a use for the cache for years, both the hardware and Proton have improved to a point that I haven’t seen any performance issue without it and you avoid having to build it over and over every time there’s a Proton or driver update that invalidates the cache you have, don’t know if it’s still useful on low-end hardware like the Steam Deck.
You can always try without and test if you have any issues and turn it back on if you feel it helps in your case.
