Ideapad 145 and Garuda install

Did a Balena etcher usb install. The USB is working, I reinstalled Zorin with the same reformatted USB after Garuda failed to install after an hour or so. Though Garuda didn't install, it cleaned the disks before a command to do so, hence requiring the Zorin reload. The USB is fine and yes I did redo the iso on the USB. Iso is not corrupt because it installed happily on a Dell Latitude 13.

Any ideas?

Is that helpful?

Maybe, not normal inxi output, read again the wiki above. Greetings SGS

In what way? At what point? What file did you download? What options did you choose?

This seems highly unlikely; the only point a disk would be cleared is after you choose “Use whole disk” or similar.

Therefore, please provide specific details so someone can attempt to replicate the issue.

Hi Jonathon. However unlikely it may seem to you, that's what happened. Used etcher to flash the KDE iso, I booted from the USB, clicked on the blue installation line, screen went black. I waited for a significant period of time including making a meal and taking a shower, the installation hadn't budged. Powered off the lap top. I never got near choosing whether to erase the disc or partition. Took out the USB. Tried to reboot to Zorin, the Zorin OS was gone and there was no Garuda, just a grub line with no information or text. Please don't assume that Garuda is faultless, it clearly isn't, and while I'm no expert, I can read and I have installed distros before. There's the details; when I rebooted this was all there was:

grub> _

I also tried the dr460n but that wouldn't go beyond a black screen. I again flashed Zorin 15.3 onto the same USB to reinstall with no problems at all from Zorin iso.

Hi SGS. Thanks for your reply. Sorry about the long line. I'm afraid I can't identify the bug per se, indeed I'm not even sure it was just a bug. All I got was a grub line on a black screen, as below. And Zorin OS erased from the disk. Please see the details in my reply to Jonathan for the complete (and shorter) story.

grub> _

Also, of note is that I successfully installed Garuda on the family's Dell laptop with the same USB before it failed on the Lenovo Ideapad. S145. So it's maybe unlikely that it's Garuda, and perhaps related to the IdeaPad configuration or hardware. Originally on Windows 10. Secure boot disabled.

Ok. Ensured clean partition. New USB (just in case) tested USB with Pop OS. Works fine. Cleared partition again. Flashed Garuda to the new ISB with Etcher. Inserted to USB port. Started IdeaPad 145 with pin. Selected USB from boot menu. Garuda start page opened. Clicked on the blue install line. Lenovo splash screen came up. Then black screen with a brief flash of very pale blue rectangle in the top left hand corner of the screen. Wait 22 minutes. No chage on black screen. Powered off. This time alternative OS untouched.

Your bios is outdated:

Regarding your statement that your drive was wiped. I do recall an issue on Manjaro several years ago where the Calamares installer was responsible for wiping partitions. It did not happen without user intervention though. IIRC a specific sequence of events had to be chosen then canceled. It did not just happen on its own. I'm not saying it's impossible, because I've learned to never say never. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Thanks for the info! I've been away from microsoft myself...I crack on with this and see how it goes. It is weird that the disk was wiped - it's never happened to me before.

I have noticed several Lenovo Ideapads with a refusal to boot properly posted in the last few days. I have no idea why.

Just as a way of removing other variables be sure your ISO has been checksumed properly, and use dd instead of etcher to burn your iso to the flashdrive. Another easier and very reliable method is to use Suse Studio Imagewriter to burn your boot disk. I know you said the flashdrive is fine, but just to remove that as another variable test out another thumb drive (if you have one available).

Another possibility if you have an external USB DVD drive is to actually burn the disk to a real DVD. Ocaissionaly using a real DVD disc instead of a thumb drive yields better results. I know most consider this ancient technology, but sometimes older is more reliable. Generally you don't encounter bad sectors with a freshly burnt DVD as you may with a very well used older thumb drive. Just an alternate method to consider if a DVD read/writer is available.

Another option worth researching would be to search for some useful grub kernel boot parameters that have helped with similar Lenovo laptops and your AMD graphics chip. As I have never used a Lenovo laptop I'm unfamiliar with any boot parameters that might be helpful in this situation.

I highly suggest you update your bios as this is one of the most likely cures in many cases. Another thing you might want to do before updating your bios is to reset your bios to the factory defaults (not necessary if updating bios). Be sure to disable secure boot and ensure the bios is set to AHCI mode after any bios update/reset.

Another suggestion that may be useful for troubleshooting purposes would be to test either the KDE or Gnome barebones editions. This would be useful to test as these editions use the LTS kernel. On the off chance this problem is kernel related this would help with eliminating variables that might be contributing to your problem. Troubleshooting is often a long methodical process of elimination where you need to tick off as many boxes as possible. It is more than likely a graphics issue causing your problem. However, you can never really be sure unless you cross off all other likely possiblities from the list.

Good luck.
