Huion tablet recognized, but screen won't turn on

Hello! I have installed Garuda Linux as a daily driver for my main computer. All works fine, except for my Huion GS1161 (Kamvas 12) tablet. While it is recognized as a tablet, and I am able to draw with pen pressure, it isn't recognized as a second monitor properly even though I have plugged it in to my HDMI port. I was able to make the screen tablet work when I previously used Linux Mint, but I'm not sure why it isn't working here. I'd like to get the tablet display to turn on, so I can use it like I always have, as having the display always turned off just makes it as good as a cheap tablet haha.

Oddly enough, though, it seems to be detected as some sort of HDMI device in my display settings, but the tablet still won't turn on the screen.

When I am in display settings, the green box is named "HAT 12" HDMI 1-0".

My garuda-inxi is below.

Just to exclude the obvious, Huion Pen Display Shows A Black Screen or No Signal : HUION

resetting does nothing :frowning: I am sure there's nothing wrong with the cables or the connection.

I'm wondering if it could have something to do with the driver, I see comments on AUR (en) - huiontablet saying the most recent versions have dropped support for earlier models.
I also see there is a diagnostic tool AUR (en) - uclogic-tools (GitHub - DIGImend/uclogic-tools: UC-Logic graphics tablet diagnostic tools) that may (or may not) help troubleshooting.

I have good news, I believe the driver support my tablet because it shows the model name and I have settings for it. Still, nothing shows on the screen.

UC-Logic probe gives me this:

still pretty difficult to figure out...

Looks right indeed.
Reading https://www.huion.com/dowload/driver-update-log.html I'm rather confused.
Last mention of Kamvas 12 is for the v15.2.18.93 2021-04-16 version, but then it's not clear if support for that model has been removed or not. I may have missed something though.
Current AUR driver is v15.0.0.103.202208301443-1, and the comments there refer to v15.0.0.89.202205241352 as the last one with support for earlier models, too bad it isn't clear which models. And those version numbers add to my confusion...

Facepalm.
I scrolled down to read the log and didn't realize I was looking at the Windows drivers...
15.0.0.80 is the last one for Kamvas 12 on Linux (listed there).

Try downgrading the driver, if anything just to rule it out as the source of trouble.
It may well be something else though (perhaps it needs some Xorg configuration?)

aur-1a22576ed2652e2d156e9feb58caf025f9a043db.tar.gz
(the PKGBUILD for v15.0.0.89.202205241352)

tar xzf aur-1a22576ed2652e2d156e9feb58caf025f9a043db.tar.gz
cd aur-1a22576ed2652e2d156e9feb58caf025f9a043db
makepkg -i

should do... well I'm quite sure it won't burn your house.

Downgraded, and still the same issue.

This is from the ArchWiki (Graphics tablet - ArchWiki):

Installation

The Arch Linux kernels include drivers by the linux-wacom and DIGImend projects. linux-wacom supports Wacom devices, while DIGImend supports devices from other manufacturers. Both projects publish a list of supported devices: linux-wacom, DIGImend.

I checked, Huion tablets are DIGImend.

Install the xf86-input-wacom driver. After restarting X, the included /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/70-wacom.conf configuration file will automatically load the wacom(4) driver when plugging Wacom devices. If your device is not a Wacom, you will need to manually configure Xorg in order to use it with the wacom driver and be able to configure it.

Check to make sure you have the xf86-input-wacom driver installed, then you are going to have to do the manual configuration since you have a DIGImend device.

Create a file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d, where VID:PID is your USB ID as seen by lsusb:

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-tablet.conf

Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "Tablet"
    Driver "wacom"
    MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
    MatchUSBID "*VID:PID*"
EndSection

Tip: A sample configuration file covering several non-Wacom devices is provided by the DIGImend project here.

The command xsetwacom list devices should now list some devices. If it does not, see #Manual setup.

I put my config file to match my ID that was shown in the lsusb, but nothing. xsetwacom list devices also doesn't show anything.

I'm just really confused why it won't work here, when it worked well when I put in the drivers in my old distro. o_O

What is it?

I see there’s a list of known devices on the DIGImend driver site: DIGImend - Tablets and the GS1161 is not among them. I also notice that the only two “G something” models known are listed as unsupported, I hope it doesn’t mean anything. Nothing on linux-hardware.org either.

By the way, I noticed on the website that they refer to their drivers as “out of tree drivers”, and my confusion intensifies: kernel should have the drivers, but then there’s the DIGImend ones and the Huion ones? Anyway, see the readme on github, maybe there’s something to install (AUR packages digimend-*, the non-git ones are marked outdated though).

But first, I think a recap of what is currently installed and configured would help.
I wouldn’t want to add more variables to the problem.

I also found this blog post, maybe there is something interesting there even though it’s for Fedora:

It’s in Spanish, I hope you can read it (why do I think so?) and sadly, there’s nothing specifically for the display, it’s all about the input side of it like the rest of the information I could locate.

If you still have the Mint installation where it works, maybe some hint can be gathered from its Xorg and udev configuration files, don’t just copy stuff over, report here and hope someone can make sense of it.
