How to stop Steam | How to remove desktop icon

Hi, Gurada gaming noob here. So I go the games menu and select Steam which duly starts but how do I stop it. I mean I can close the Steam launcher but the Steam Icon remains on the desktop. How do I close that?

Right click on that icon and from the lower most option is of exit, just click on that .

Explore Steam’s and your own desktop’s settings. Good grief.

Thanks, I did right click on it but didn’t see the exit option, that’s not say it’s not there. I shall try again when I get home and look more closely.

Hi again. OK back home, did as you suggested, right click the desktop icon gives a long list of options such as cut / copy / root actions - the last item is properties. If I select Games from the application launcher and right click on the Steam (runtime) I get a ‘Exit Application’ option but selecting it does not exit the application it just pops up the properties box. This is Dr460nized KDE.

How to stop Steam

Do you want to stop?
Do you want to close?
Do you want to remove the icon from Desktop?

Also post the garuda-inxi, please.

Run this :

killall -9 steam

and your application is closed , if still icon appears then it means it was actually by default there, it doesn’t matter whether you open or close app

My bad, I’ve had a brain fart. It’s been so long since I’ve had a desktop short cut on Linux I’d forgotten all about them, I don’t use them in Fedora in fact I don’t think it’s possible to create one. I don’t use them in Windows either, I launch Windows apps using an app called Touch Portal (which is something else I’d like to get running, probably with Lutris but if not there is a Linux alternative called Deckboard but that won’t have the API to integrate with Elite Dangerous which is something I’d really like to keep as I’ve spent a fair amount of time creating panels for the game). So apologies to the community please ignore my request for help, the thing I’m trying to close isn’t a running app, just a desktop short cut for launching Steam.

That’s what I was suspecting so I advised to run :

If nothing would have been actually running then it would have shown error like this :

 ╭─ankur@ankur in ~
 ╰─λ killall -9 steam
steam: no process found

:slightly_smiling_face:

This is then also not a solution that should be marked.
I close here.
