Here’s a well-written report you can copy-paste to the Garuda Linux forums to get help from the community:
Mic Static Noise Issue on Garuda Linux (OBS & Audacity)
System Info:
OS: Garuda Linux x86_64
Host: Lenovo ideapad 81DK
Kernel: 6.14.2-zen1-1-zen
DE: KDE Plasma 6.3.4 (Wayland)
WM: KWin
Mic: Built-in laptop microphone
Audio System: PipeWire (confirmed via systemctl)
Issue Description:
Whenever I try to record my voice using OBS or Audacity, I get a very loud static/buzzing noise, like the sound of a disconnected cable box. This happens even when I’m silent.
- I’ve tested in OBS, Audacity, and using
arecord
— the issue is consistent. - The problem is with the built-in laptop mic.
- The system sound and playback work perfectly fine — only the mic recording is affected.
What I’ve Tried So Far:
- Reduced mic input level in
pavucontrol
- Disabled echo cancellation and other effects
- Checked
alsamixer
:- Mic Boost set to 0
- Capture volume lowered to 70%
- Restarted PipeWire services:
systemctl --user restart pipewire pipewire-pulse wireplumber
- Confirmed correct input device is selected in OBS and Audacity
- Tried different noise suppression filters in OBS (RNNoise, Speex)
- Disabled all unnecessary audio input sources
Additional Notes:
- The noise appears regardless of app (OBS, Audacity, even
arecord
) - Using Wayland session
- Not using any external mic or USB soundcard
- Uptime at the time of test: 34 minutes
What I Need Help With:
- Is this a driver or PipeWire config issue?
- Any way to properly calibrate or clean built-in mic input on Garuda?
- Would switching to PulseAudio help in this case?
- Should I consider a USB mic or external audio card?
Any help would be appreciated — I’d love to get clean audio working for game commentary and videos!
Thanks
