Hello from a new full time Linux user

2024-09-28 I was finally born again.
A bit about me I have been using computers since I got my VIC-20, yes I’m that old. Been working with electronics and computers most of my life. Currently working in IT. Since most businesses use PC for the main workstations I had to run that as my main computer.
Ever since VM’s and WSL came out, I have been looking at migrating to Linux so I was checking out different distros.
My criteria was, had to be able to install wine, virtual manager and play some games.
I found Garuda Gaming version which had all that pre-installed. I tested it and that was it,

I love this distro, the only thing I can’t run natively is I need to access a website that only allows a more modern version on IE, so I running it on a Windows VM.

Thanks to everyone that got the distro up and running, I should have switched years ago.

You only missed ~ 4.5 years, Garuda hasn’t been around longer

Nice to meet you! I am planning on investing in my CompTIA A + Certification so I can get my internship in IT. It’s a requirement for college! I won’t be able to work anywhere on-site but I hope to be able to work somewhere over the phone as IT Help Desk Support. Pleasure to meet a professional. You should connect with me on linked in. Message me if you’re interested!

You’re never too old to enjoy Linux.

Always nice to see more Canucks hopping on the Garuda bandwagon.

Welcome to the Garuda community @cybertheworm.

Welcome fellow Canuck! I immigrated many many moons ago. No you’re never too old for Garuda-Linux. Yes, I also used a Vic-20. my cousin and I used to spend Friday nights programming games while listening to Video Hits on CBC TV  Good Times!

cheers mate, i just switched over a few weeks ago myself. so far, so good, even not knowing what i’m doing 80% the time i been enjoying it and find i’m logged out of win 10 as soon as i can n swap over to my Garuda. it’s been a LOT of reading which leads to more questions , hence more reading for me, lol. but im already prefer it for general surfing n whatnot. Hope you find it as fun as i have. :cowboy_hat_face: :v:

it really is fun !! I love the asthetic <3 I’m almost tempted to try the hyperland edition but I’m so new it would probably be overkill for me xD

I work in the IT industry in Australia, USA and now back in India. Have been a linux users for the last 20 years. Started with Ubuntu ( Warty Warthog), moved to crunchbang and sidux, distrohopped a lot and finally settled on Arch. Have used Arch for the last 7 years first with archlabs, then pure arch.

I knew about Garuda, but never really was interested because I am a Qtile user and Garuda flagship is KDE.

Recently started using Chaotic-AUR and finally decided to give Garuda a try. Installed the XFCE spin and then manually installed Qtile

i love Linux. Windows XP was my last good bye to what i would term shit, and i have loved being in control of my operating system ever since.

Once the transition has been made to Linux, no one in their right mind, would of their own free will go back to Windows, unless forced to.

However over the years Linux has made enormous head way out performing, in ever department, Macro-Scoff-It-Forever-Windows.

i love Linux, and above all Garuda!

Hi there @ranjan.

We did initially have a Qtile Garuda version, but it was dropped because of a lack of a maintainer. If you ever felt up to being a maintainer for Qtile, just let us know. We’d love to have you jump aboard and breathe new life into Qtile.

Again, wecome to Garuda all you old dudes.

Cheers, from Canada. :beers:

Not really, it’s just that more people have noticed it so far, and therefore it’s been reported on more because it’s even more colorful than the other DE’s. Well, KDE itself is nothing to sneeze at
The basics are the same for all of them.

Good idea.

no lies detected xD

DistroTube had a look at it and it wasnt a good look, if i remember right?

I can configure a working Qtile config but i do not know anything about being a maintainer.

I could help someone maintain with inputs, python help and qtile configs

I’ll take a look at the repo and try to figure out where and if i can help
