If it works only sometimes, it might be a connection or hardware fault even. An unsecured connection could explain why it would be trying to play from both. I would try different stereo pin headphones for troubleshooting purposes as well.
I would search more for your model in regards to in-built audio on Linux (you might be more lucky with this as I seemed to hit a dead end).

Im 99% sure this is a configuration issue and can be solved by some tweaking ,as mentioned at old arch forums post —> referring to this one

actually i reinstall it today
initially it was working fine
but when it got system update means after installing it is asking for update
i update it
then it all happen
Just revert back to an older snapshot (before the last update) , few days and maybe another update will fix this .
