Graphics card gets to 100% in two specific games, causing huge FPS drop and stream halt

Hi folks.

So, back in this other topic I mentioned that I was then able to play Driftland for more than 3 hours without any significant problems, except for some minor around-a-minute-long hiccups that made FPS drop from steady 60 to around 4-5.

So I decided to go one step further and see if I could stream now. And turns out I mostly can. Did a few runs in the past few days, and also today. Played Bayonetta (if you wanna check it out), Noita, Destiny of Fate, Jagged Alliance, Headsnatchers, Gene Shift Auto… and Fort Triumph. And here’s where hell broke loose.

The same hiccups that happened with Driftland decided to show up again on Fort Triumph… but this seems to be related to something over using (???) the graphics card. Along with the FPS drop, I was monitoring GPU usage with nvtop and saw the GPU % go up to 100%, and when it was over OBS had halted streaming with an error message saying that

187 │ 22:04:00.742: [NVIDIA NVENC H.264 (FFmpeg) encoder: 'simple_video_stream'] Encoding queue duration surpassed 5 seconds, terminating encoder
 188 │ 22:04:00.742: Error encoding with encoder 'simple_video_stream'
189 │ 22:04:00.742: Video stopped, number of skipped frames due to encoding lag: 1057/430015 (0.2%)
 190 │ 22:04:00.742: [rtmp stream: 'simple_stream'] Encoder error, disconnecting

you folks have any tips on what I should look into that could be causing these two games to make this huge GPU consumption?

I’m gonna up this just this once, it’s not only those two games, it’s not even only same-engine games, like say Unity or Unreal.

It’s also apparently random as hell, because yesterday I left Omensight open for the whole day and whenever job#2 gave me a break I would play it… and I was playing nicely.

Then, when night fell, every now and then it’d happen. And the only thing every time the FPS dropped had in common was GPU usage at 100%…

also, not only the game FPS’ dropped, but performance in the whole system all around. Moving the mouse would be affected, typing would be affected, everything.
