GDM issue: no users shown

Hi there,

I’ve been struggling a bit lately with GDM no longer showing any user accounts (although in my case only one user ought to be listed). What’s more: after manually entering the user name, nothing much happens (a long pause, after which the form field gets cleared). The good news is I finally found out about /var/lib/AcccountsService, which seems to clarify the difference between the user actually existing vs the user showing up on the login screen.

Both my default user and its corresponding icon are listed there (and file permissions seem correct), but the directory doesn’t contain anything else except for the users and icons subdir. According to someone on the Fedora forum (GDM does not list my user anymore / gnome initial setup runs instead - #5 by liquidat - Fedora Discussion) this directory should contain at least a gdm subdir as well, although it’s a relatively old post.

I tried (re)moving the “/var/lib/AccountsService” dir and reinstalling the accountsservice package like someone else suggested, but although the “/var/lib/AccountService” directory gets recreated, it does not get repopulated.

Earlier on I 've tried (re)moving my “~/.config/dconf” dir, but alas, that didn’t help either. Using LightDM does work, logging in through a tty and manually starting gnome-session works as well, but at some point I’d like to have this issue tackled.

Any insights would be highly appreciated.

My garuda-inxi output is as follows:

This is probably a dumb suggestion , but you could check that for your user you don’t have true here:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/GDM#Hide_user_from_login_list
Maybe try also reinstalling gdm altogether…

I highly suggest to switch into using Lightdm rather than gdm , it works well with every DE . Gnome stuff is just pain to deal with .

Try disabling all of your Gnome extensions and see if that makes any difference.

Thanks for your help!

The SystemAccount setting is not a dumb suggestion at all, I just happened to have stumbled upon it already.

I’ll try rebooting with all extensions disabled. If that doesn’t help, I will consider using LightDM.
