Here is my issue, some times when I have many updates to install. I have to keep typing garuda-update -a over and over to get all the files downloaded. It gets annoying but it’s not an overall problem. Like seen here…

So my questions are…

  1. Is there an option setting like -a but can keep cycling through the updates till there all downloaded an installed automatically? I know I can automatically have everything downloaded in the background so they can install quicker. For that I’m using Pamac, however sometimes it gets stuck and doesn’t download files a head of time for some reason.
  2. Is there an option to just automatically proceed with the install rather then just sit and wait for the user to press enter when your asked Proceed with installation? [Y/n]. In Debian you use to be able to do sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y full-upgrade and it would just rock and roll, but does such an option exist for Garuda?

Yes, read the Garuda wiki, its explained also often in the Garuda forum.

This is not recommended, but is already listed here in the forum.

Sorry, but :scream:
Please search first before asking questions here.

Sorry about that, I didn’t know there was one, most of my questions were often referred to the Arch Linux information

That’s just pamac.

At best it sort of works. At it’s worst it’s DDOS’ing the entire AUR.

Pamac is arguably the worst piece of software ever created other than maybe some bug that would like, destroy a nuclear powerplant or something literally catastrophic.

…And yet, it’s provided as an install package option when you select what programs you would like to install when you install Garuda on a computer for the first time. If it was really that bad like you say, then the right thing to do would have been to remove it as an option during installation. Just saying

It’s you’re computer. If you want trash broken programs on it, that’s up to you.

As all things in life, I am wholeheartedly for everyone being allowed to make whatever choices they like as long as it doesn’t take away that same freedom from another.

In the same regards, everyone is entitled to the consequences of their actions as long as its not at the expense of others.

If you can afford cocaine, go for it. If you are ok with the effects of pamac on your system. Go for it.

Just don’t say you were not warned.

It is just as suitable for searching and app informations as pacseek and we recommend using it only for searching. At least 100 times in this forum.
We also repeatedly point out that you should only use the terminal for installations and updates.
If you read man pacman you will see it is a powerful tool and faster than GUI.

So what I am looking for is a program of some kind to pre-download (not install) all the updates on my system while I’m a sleep or away. This way I can do garuda-update -a and it flys through the installation. I’m in a location where DSL is so bad, that I have to do that garuda-update command over and over and over to keep downloading all the updates. It won’t automatically just keep going all on its own.

If there is some alternative to pamac so I can have all the updates downloaded automatically on hand, I’m all ears

Say it, ma brother!

Yeah, its called Windows.

If this is a must have, I BELIEVE(I’m not 100% on it though) Linux Mint can be setup for completely automated updates. You may want to check it out. They are trying to be the absolute beginner/average user distro and Windows replacement.

Interesting, I got away from Debian builds when I started to work with Arch and Gentoo more. I guess I will have to live with out.

Come on…the public shaming is already bad enough, you don’t have to get cruel and unusual :persevere:

Is there an option to only download updates using Pacman?

See, I have to download everything locally onto my hard drive. It’s the nature of having bad DSL, and I refuse to get StarLink. I will use a 9600 bps dial up modem from the 1980ies before I give in to that technology. However it just means everything has to be locally downloaded first before I continue. Software, updates, movies, games…it all of it has to be downloaded so they can run smoother. It doesn’t have to install automatically, I just want to download everything locally so I can examine them before I install them, that’s all.

I love Garuda and all, it has everything I ever needed all in one package for the most part. I just wish the updates would be a little “bad internet connection” friendlier that’s all. But yes, Pamac can download files locally and have them sit there on your hard drive ready to go so I can install them the next morning doing a garuda-update -a and it just fly’s through them. That is why I like this program (despite the occasional getting stuck once in the while locking up the garuda-update command), and like I mentioned before, I’m open to alternatives for other package programs other then Pamac.

Till then, I got a roll out that twenty dollar bill and have some cocaine.

Finally something I can agree with!

Directly from the pacman manpage:

UPGRADE OPTIONS (APPLY TO -S AND -U)

-w, --downloadonly
Retrieve all packages from the server, but do not install/upgrade anything.

And to help with downloading slowdowns:

–disable-download-timeout
Disable defaults for low speed limit and timeout on downloads. Use this if you have issues downloading files with proxy and/or security gateway.

And, to proceed without waiting for a prompt:

–noconfirm
Bypass any and all “Are you sure?” messages. It’s not a good idea to do this unless you want to run pacman from a script.

So, to answer the questions, yes, pacman can download packages without installing them and be directed to ignore low speed connections and avoid timeouts. All your answers are readily available in the manpage.

Now for the million dollar question, why is --downloadonly and –disable-download-timeout not listed in garuda-update?

Even if it was included you wouldn’t use it.
Just as you haven’t read the pacman man pages, you haven’t read the wiki on garuda-update.
Because you can save yourself the constant -a if you set it once in the config.
In addition, simply use the alias upd in the terminal.

Now for the million dollar question,

why do people still have to starve in this world?

Because Garuda Update does not provide those options, Pacman does.

Should I expect a check in the mail for the million dollars, or…?

That’s right, the documentation does mention this. See the “extra pacman parameters” section: Garuda Update | Garuda Linux wiki

If you want to add Pacman flags to Garuda Update just break them out with a double-dash (--).

garuda-update -- --downloadonly --disable-download-timeout

Or you can permanently add flags by adding them to the config with the PACMAN_EXTRA_OPTS variable.

I believe there were at least 4 persons including myself that alluded to the fact that your answers were in the Pacman manpages. I believe your questions have been answered. Please mark a solution so that we can put this thread to rest.
