Garuda-i3-linux-zen-250308.iso stalls in backlit black-screen before grub (dd instead of ventoy)

Today, I:

  • downloaded garuda-i3-linux-zen-250308.iso
  • dd if=garuda-i3-linux-zen-250308.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=4M status=progress oflag=sync
  • boot it in a Lenovo TP X1 in UEFI-mode with SecurityChip and SecurityBoot disabled
  • reproducibly ended up stuck in a backlit black-screen even before reaching the Grub menu

I noticed that:

  • latest debian-netinst.iso boots just fine with the same USB on the same laptop
  • garuda-i3-linux-zen-250308.iso boots, but only using ventoy

Why would simply dd’ing the iso not do it, but ventoy does?
