Freezing a lot lately

Hi, I have been running Arch Linux since 2007 while maintaining my own little installation instructions but decided to give Garuda Linux a spin late December. So far so good. The overall experience is impressive. I used to run FDE on LVM+LUKS+XFS and my own snapshot command before upgrading but never matched the level of integration Garuda is offering with Btrfs and Grub integration.

Now I experienced a lot of lags and freezes (had to hard reboot once) over the past few days. Sometimes I can alt+tab but not click on anything. Other times I just can't do anything even switching virtual consoles via ctrl+alt+2,3,4...

I'm running the KDE Dr460nized edition in on a i7-8550U CPU @ 1.80GHz with 16GB RAM (Lenovo X1 Carbon).

Has the latest linux-tkg-bmq 5.10.4 shown any sign of instability?
So far I reverted back to 5.10.3 to see if it makes a difference.

There is one more thing I changed over the past few days is the compositor rendering backend. Since I kept loosing the fancy effects over time, I went from the default OpenGL 3.1 (?) to XRender. Could that be the problem as well?
I'm going to try to switch to OpenGL 2.0 to see if things improve.

Have other users experienced similar freezing issues lately?

Yes, there has been some freezing issues reported on the linux-tkg-bmq kernel recently. Most seem happy with that kernel, but depending on the hardware there has been some issues reported.

I would post your:

inxi -Fxxxza

I would also test at least three alternate kernels.

Some choices worth testing might be:

linux
linux-zen
linux-lts
linux-hardened
linux-mainline

The choice of specific kernels is sometimes very dependent upon your computers age and hardware components. So, do some research to figure out which kernel(s) might be the best choices for your specific hardware.

Always keep at least two kernels installed at all times as a fall back.

Thanks for the pointers.

 what about journal errors captain? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I thought it was all good but loading the system with a couple of browsers at the same time triggered the slow down.
I see something related to swap in journalctl. I remember that I did select a swapfile during setup just to be on the safe side. Would that conflict with the zram implementation?

 journalctl -b -1 -xp3 --no-hostname --no-pager jeu. 07 janv. 2021 14:52:23

AFAIK it should not. But it seems swapfile could not be created. IIRC systemd-swap or systemd-zram is used to auto-create swapfile at start. Can you check which service is failing to do this? And relevant conf settings?

LVM setup is not a usual scheme and I guess not heavily tested on Garuda ISO profiles. You have to investigate this a bit and give feedback, so we can fix any wrong default setting/script.

Have you chosen auto-login during install?
Have you migrated any of your Arch install settings/config etc. that might conflict?
You may disable one or more of udev rules or tmpfiles auto settings, to start eliminating one by one the possible issues.
In this flood of messages, some would be triggered from a previous issue, but we can’t say for sure.
Check what timestamp was boot start, so we know if and which connect to your later freezing and not just boot issues.

I forgot… Test another kernel!!!

There is a section in Arch wiki dedicated to swap file on Btrfs
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Btrfs#Swap_file

Does the ISO setup follow this process?

It also says

The swap file cannot be on a snapshotted subvolume. The proper procedure is to create a new subvolume to place the swap file in.

I tried the subvolume way but it wouldn’t work because the sub-volume of a sub-volume cannot have different attributes (compression/noCoW).

I then found this nice post that gave me the solution: [SOLVED] Swapfile on BTRFS filesystem with compression enabled / Kernel & Hardware / Arch Linux Forums

# sudo su
# truncate -s 0 /mnt/swapfile
# chattr +C /mnt/swapfile
# btrfs property set /mnt/swapfile compression none
# fallocate -l 4G /mnt/swapfile
# chmod 600 /mnt/swapfile
# lsattr /mnt/swapfile
# mkswap /mnt/swapfile
# swapon /mnt/swapfile

I then modified /etc/fstab with the right path:
/mnt/swapfile swap swap defaults,noatime 0 0

Swap using the swapfile is now active.

 # swapon --show
 NAME TYPE SIZE USED PRIO
 /mnt/swapfile file 4G 0B -2
 /dev/zram0 partition 1,9G 0B 32767
 /dev/zram1 partition 1,9G 0B 32767
 /dev/zram2 partition 1,9G 0B 32767
 /dev/zram3 partition 1,9G 0B 32767
 /dev/zram4 partition 1,9G 0B 32767
 /dev/zram5 partition 1,9G 0B 32767
 /dev/zram6 partition 1,9G 0B 32767
 /dev/zram7 partition 1,9G 0B 32767

So now does it make any sense to have 15GB swap in zram and 4GB swap in a swap file?

Yes we create the swapfile in @cache subvoulume which is /var/cache directory

Do you mean in Calamares?
But as mentioned, Calamares (auto)uses /var/cache for swapfile.
Have you changed fstab manually and when?
Is there a swapfile at /@/cache/?

I checked a box in the installer from the installer indicating that I wanted to use a swap file in addition to encrypted Btrfs filesystem.

I didn’t change /etc/fstab after installation so it contained the following from day 1:

/swapfile swap swap defaults,noatime 0 0

I do confirm that there is swapfile (536MB) found in /var/cache/swapfile. I think the installer indicated that the swapfile was going to be 2GB large.

I went ahead and reverted my changes except the /etc/fstab so it points to /var/cache/swapfile instead of /swapfile and it worked.

Looking at the source it looks like that a 512MB swapfile is hardcoded

 desired_size = 512 * 1024 * 1024  # 512MiB

Is there any benefit on increasing the size of that swapfile from 512MB to 2-4GB and thus considering my setup (16GB RAM)?

Regarding the default location of the swapfile in fstab defined in Calamares, it looks like that it is fixed to /swapfile:

 if swap_choice:
    swap_choice = swap_choice.get( "swap", None )
    if swap_choice and swap_choice == "file":
        # There's no formatted partition for it, so we'll sneak in an entry
        partitions.append( dict(fs="swap", mountPoint=None, claimed=True, device="/swapfile", uuid=None) )
    else:
        swap_choice = None

The usual benefit of possible hibernation, but I haven’t doublechecked this for btrfs setup.

@librewish Can you check this, please? Has it been tested?

Hmm well i have not tested as i dont use any swap file/partition
As zram s enough for me.

Fallocate has been deprecated, using that method can itself cause problems. Using dd is now the recommended method.

Is this issue in all kernels or only tkg kernel?

I also tried lts and zen kernels and experienced the same issues. KDE will hang for few seconds without being able to click on anything.
I also went back xrender as back-end for the compositor and even disabled ananicy but that didn't help.
I'm at a point where I'm considering going back to a vanilla Archlinux because my machine is not predictable anymore. Maybe the btrfs+snapshot every hour is too much for my configuration.
