Dolphin forgets all mimetypes a couple times per day

Since a couple of days it happens that Dolphin “simply forgets” all mimetimes a couple times a day. I searched around the internet and found kbuildsycoca6 but that didn’t work until i instead did XDG_MENU_PREFIX=arch- kbuildsycoca6 wich restores functionality for a couple of hours.

I already removed the mimesapp.list in ~/.config and found one aswell in ~/.local/share/applications but that one was 0kb big…regardless of a new and fresh mimesapp.list file or my original one, it doesn’t hold the functional state for long and i have to rerun XDG_MENU_PREFIX=arch- kbuildsycoca6 again to make it work again.

Interestingly enough, running Nautilus works just fine… (but i hate nautilus and would much rather continue to use dolphin lol)

I cleared the ~/.cache of dolphin to no avail… Does anyone here have an idea?

Thanks!

What say the KDE debug page about?

Don’t exactly know what you mean. Do you mean some debug application? Or some website?

In terms of websites i didn’t find anything specifically related to dolphin besides this: The Dolphin Handbook but i didn’t find anything there that striked me as being helpful in this situation…

wild idea: you could try monitoring the mimeapps.list file with a tool like auditctl and then get the accessing PID to obtain the process name. This would help you and us a ton in finding the root cause

Can do that but i have never used that tool

any recommendations for how the command should look like?

You firstly need to enable auditctl via sudo audictl -e 1 (this will only enable it for the duration of your current session)
And use it accordingly - auditctl -h sais sudo auditctl -w /path/to/file

Afaik it then starts dumping logs into /var/log/audit.

Yeah i tried the sudo auditctl -w /path command but didn’t do the -e 1 before.

now it says:

sudo auditctl -e 1
enabled 1
failure 1
pid 0
rate_limit 0
backlog_limit 64
lost 0
backlog 0
backlog_wait_time 60000
backlog_wait_time_actual 0

  franky  ~  sudo auditctl -w ~/.config/mimeapps.list
Old style watch rules are slower
Error sending add rule data request (Rule exists)
There was an error while processing parameters

And /var/logs/audit is empty

you seemingly also need to start the auditd service for this to work. The log is then /var/log/audit/audit.log and it logs literally everything. I just tried it.

You could just keep the file open and look out for changes via e.g. sudo tail +1f /var/log/audit/audit.log

  franky  ~  sudo auditctl -w ~/.config/mimeapps.list
Old style watch rules are slower

  franky  ~  sudo tail +1f /var/log/audit/audit.log
tail: cannot open '/var/log/audit/audit.log' for reading: No such file or directory
tail: no files remaining

  franky  ~  sudo auditctl -l
-w /home/frank-garuda/.config/mimeapps.list -p rwxa

and i just tried to provoke it by manually editing ~/.config/mimeapps.list a little bit… nothing there

did you start the systemd service?

my bad… just enabled them and forgot to start.

yeah now i get a bunch of logs

sudo tail +1f /var/log/audit/audit.log

how you’ll just have to wait and see what happens
when something does write to it you can get the PID and see which process is doing it

Issue is i have no idea what to look for… i mean the mimeapps.list seems okay, especially since nautilus can still use it and it’s not being changed after i run XDG_MENU_PREFIX=arch- kbuildsycoca6

So i don’t know what to watch for…

I thought you said that your mimeapps.list file got cleared out regularly?

If you don’t even have a mimeapps file right now, you could try running update-mime-database $HOME/.local/share/mime (that should probably also show up in your audit log  )

No there was a misunderstanding.

The one in ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list is 0kb big, but that is the case even after XDG_MENU_PREFIX=arch- kbuildsycoca6

The one in ~/.config/mimeapps.list stays the same all throughout

it might just be that kde tries to read the mimetypes from the file every so often and then resets everything as a result. I had no issues like that when I used to run kde but in your case I’d try generating some actual mimetypes there as I suggested

Running update-mime-database $HOME/.local/share/mime didn’t fix, also it didn’t show up in auditctl

i now simply copied everything from the mimeapps.list in ~/.config over to the one in .local but that didn’t fix anything either…

As of writing this, Dolphin forgot everything again, both mimelists contain everything and are owned by my user…

As soon as i run XDG_MENU_PREFIX=arch- kbuildsycoca6 it will work again and i find the according entry in the audit logs.

But no update on there

i currently made the workaround that i just let cron run XDG_MENU_PREFIX=arch- kbuildsycoca6 every minute…
