Devices vs disks

Trying to get a hand on linux file system here. I have nvme0n1 which is my primary drive holding ‘boot’, ‘swap’ and ‘/’, I also got nvme1n1 which I have mounted to ‘home/idun9/data’ which will act more of a permanent drive for moving a bit more around but will be my main source of allways keep data. Somewhat similar to D:\ drive in windows.

As for devices view in Dolphin, when i enter nvme1n1 there is a lost & found folder, this is used to recover files that are not linked to any place and should be kept there for safe keeping. Is there some way to hide it as it’s not really needed for me, then I can bring it backup? And how can i create new folders inside nvme1n1, from device or from ‘home/idun9/data’ im not able to create subfolders, the option is blocked. Checking the permission vs nvme0n1 they seem correct.

You can make any directory a hidden directory by adding a “.” in front of the name.

mv /home/idun9/data/lost+found /home/idun9/data/.lost_found

It will only be visible in your file explorer if you have the “show hidden items” option enabled.

Those permissions look normal, however they don’t really suggest you have any permission on that device like you suggest. It says the owner (root) and members of the disk group have read and write access.

But those are the permissions for the block device anyway; what you will want to check is the permissions of the mount point of this device. If you mounted the device as root (for example, if you used sudo in the mount command) then root will be the owner of the mount point even if it is in your home directory.

You can give yourself ownership of the mount point like this:

sudo chown -R  idun9:idun9 /home/idun9/data

This gives your user ownership of the mount point, and with the -R flag you get recursive ownership of files and directories inside it as well.

Meh, just delete it. I’ve been doing so for years with no ill effects whatsoever.

Correct, folder was owned as root that had permissions. changed owner to myself and I could edit and create files without issues.
