Recently shifted from windows to linux, started out with this distribution, but recently Ive been having graphics issues. Up until recently, my screen would freeze, and after about half a minute, whole screen would go black, all apps but Firedragon would close, and i would get a notification saying that “Desktop effects were restarted due to a graphics reset” from KWin Window Manager. However, today, it would reset whenever i opened a new application. I wasn’t able to find much only, the only concrete thing that most sources were able to provide was to disable complications, but when i tried to follow the steps given to do that, i couldn’t find the setting needed. It appears to me at least that both my gpu and drivers are compatible, and the only other reason i can think of for why this would be happening as a highly inexperienced user of linux would be low ram, but i have 16GB installed, and windows is supposed to be more resource hungry than most linux distros, from what i have learned.
For context, This issue started happening about 2-3 hours of game play in a minecraft modpack I’ve been playing for about a week at this point, but i only have 8GB allocated to it, and it hasn’t given me a low ram space warning yet. Fro what i know of, I haven’t installed additional desktop effect plugins, just added or removed a few of the ones already available at install. The only other post on here with the same issue didn’t get any response or solutions, so idk how that user fixed it, if at all. Is there anything else i could try or need to look at to get this issue solved?

Remove that, modpacks/shaders are often the cause of issues with graphics drivers.

If you haven’t already done so, please bring your system up to date and then check if the issue still occurs.

Sounds like an issue with the graphics driver, which is probably causing kwin/plasmashell/compositor to crash and restart. Does this only happen with certain applications or with all of them? Are you using a custom theme and/or have you installed user-created widgets (plasmoids)?

As soon as it happens again, use

garuda-diag

in the terminal and post the generated link here.

ill try disabling the shaders, see if that helps, and my system is completely up to date, although curseforge seems unable to update, for whatever reason.

Unsure I dont think im using a custom theme, using one of the ones that came preinstalled, but i did install a plugin for my background, but its just an image.

Don’t just disable it, remove it. The point is to rule it out as a possible cause.

Which plugin exactly?

You are using curseforge from the AUR – to update AUR packages during a system update, use:

garuda-update -a

Gently-Nebula-Noir Wallpapers by l4k1 under the Get New Images in the Wallpaper settings.

I thought that disabling wouldve done the same, but i will completely remove them now.

Havent had a reset in a bit now, so will post the link in the next comment if it happens by then.

Welp, spoke too soon Here’s the link @nepti :

Since when exactly have you had this issue, from the beginning?

The installation is quite new. Did you have this issue after the installation and after the first system update, or only after you installed other packages, such as curseforge, reshade-shaders-git, etc.?

The dumps show what else crashed. The whole thing smells strongly of driver issues.

Please try the linux-znver3 kernel:

sudo pacman -S linux-znver3 linux-znver3-headers

Then reboot and select this kernel in the grub menu and test whether the issues still occur.
If no issues occur with this kernel, set it as the default kernel via “Garuda Boot Options”.

And remove all that shader/modpack stuff.

The first time this had happened was after i had installed all of my apps, a few hours into playing the modpack.
Shaders have been deleted, but unsure what you mean by deleteing the modpack, but since thats where the issues have been occuring, i wouldnt remove them just yet.

Installed and booted with, only had installed the base drivers that the system auto installed.

I have run into the same situation yesterday. I have also a year ago switch from windows to Garuda linux and run with the same desktop environment and zen core. I was playing ark survival ascended on steam that I have been playing time as I have installed Linux and never had such an issue that now occurred that the game crashes as soon as I access my inventory in game and discord shuts down and desktop environment restarted and sometimes after crash desktop doesn’t restart that forces me to force restart my pc.

Please, open a new help request under Games > Games On Steam and follow the template.
